lie Caily Review. WILMINGTON. N. C. THURSDAY. OCTOBER 2, 18I&. - f EHTKRKD AT THfC I'OSTOFFICK AT Wilmington, N. C, as Second 'Clas Mattes. WE SAY IT OVKR AGAIN. We like to see a spade called a spade , eren if it is black. Our attention bas been called to the interview held by a Baleigh Observer representative with Hon. John Manning, relative to the Judgeship which Mr. Manning so nar rowly escaped receiving, in which he (Mr. 11.) is represented as saying, in effect, that he told Got. Jar vis that if the public interests could be better subserved by ap pointing some oce else to the office tha1 he must not hesitate to do so. In this statement Mr. Manning has either wrong ed himself r has been wronged by someone else, for, as we have alreaJy published it, Mr. Manning distinctly in formed us that, alter plainly accepting the tendered Judgeship, he informed Gov Jarvis, towards the latter part of his com munication, that notwithstanding his ac ceptance, if he (Jarvfo) "could strengthen himself morj by appointing some one e't-e to the office, not to hesitate to do bo." These are very nearly tho exict wnit used to us (and to others) by Mr. Mnn uing. There was not oue word said in reference to subserving the public interests which, on occasions of this kind, is not always the first thing thought of, and we submit that there is a considerable difference be tween "subserving the public interests ' and a man's strengthening Limself by an appointinenWor a ncniiuation for which he is in training. . . We have said what we have here simply because the statement made in the Ob server is so at variance with that published by us a few weeks since, aud which has been extensively referred to by our ex changes, that we have been impelled to reiterate our previous assertions. A FEW WORDS WITH YOU. We are one of those who desire to see Samuel J. Tilden receive the nom ination of President at the hands of the next Democratic convention. There are other names which have been mentioned, t least hatf-a-score of them, any one of which might be our personal choice. Still, it is not at all .impossible that Mr. Tilden may receive the nomination, and in view of that very event we have care fully refrai ed from any criticisms which might iu the future be thrown back at us. Unlike some of our contemporaries, we do not like to be forced to eat our own words. We did not laud and magnify Mr. llyes, and had there fore nothing to tke back in respect to him ; we have not abused air. Tilden and will not therefore, iu the event of his nomination, have our own words thrown back into our teeth. Mr. Tilden's enemies, who, be it leniembered, are also the ene. mies of good government, are those who have ben active in the nrosecutinns 8rir,at. him, and this fact alone should make every cautious man withhold judgment, at ieast until the issues are decided. If Mr. Tilden is really guilty of any of the numerous charges which have been made against him it is yet to be proved. Our objections to him, however, are not because we believe him to be guilty, but simply because of the fact that charges against him have been made. He may be as pure aa.was.George Washington, but yet the man who aspires to be the leader and nominee of the Democratic party should not only be free from corruption, but from the charges of corruption at. well, in his private as well as in hiy pub lio life. This is merely as we think. If. however, the exigencies of the occasion should require Mr. Tilden's nomination we will endorse him and work for him and vote for him, yielding our "judgment to that of others. If Robinson is elected in New York; even if Ewing carries Ouio by a handsome . majority, Mr. Tilden's chances for the nomination, already thought t be good, will be greatly enhanced, and it is quite lik .ly, in such au event, that ht will be the nominee of the paity neXL year. LO ! Til f lO0 K I N I I N . We have intelligence of another con flict between Uaited States troops and a large body of the Ute tribeof Injuns, in which Major Thornbury, com a-ending the troops, and several enlisted men were killed and three officers wounded. The latest shows that the troops are surrounded by the Indians and are in a perilous condition, although other troops have been ordered forward, and are marching with all possible speed to the relief of their comrades. The cause of this fresh emeute, as is generally the case, is because a body of miners hare forced themselves upon the reservation specially assigned to the tribe This, as a matter .of course, engendered ill feeling in the tribe, and they retaliated in ach a manner aa to call for troops to snp .res them. It was wbil en route for this purpose that Iaj)r Thornbury's com mand was attacked with such disastrous results.
