It has our very cordial wishes. The Jasper Centennial. (Special to the Daily Review.) Savannah, Oct. 9, 1879. Editor Review : i i - I The Jasper Centennial, whlca is being celebrated in this city to-day, is a tre mendous success. The streets have been thronged all day and there are i two thousand troops in line. Gen. La Fayette McLaws is the Chief Marshal and Gen. i i Juo. B. Gordon the Orator. At this time, 2 o'clock, Gen. Gordon is speaking and he is being listened to by twenty thous nd people. The "Spirit of '76" is not yet dead in Savannah. F. Marl from Columbus County. Yesterday's Charlotte Observer sa)s: Capt. L. Vail, chairman of our board of c utity commissioners, has just returned from a! visit to Columbus county and brought back with him a sample of shell marl which he proposes to send to the State chemist for analysis to test its fer tilizing properties. Capt. Vail is of the opinion that this marl can be used by farmers in this section of the State to great advantage, should it prove as strong a fenii'zer as be anticipates.! His idea is to use it with acid phosphate insteadof usiug cotton seed. Large bodies of it are found near Robeeou station, on the Caroli na Central Railway, and it has been used by the farmers there with great success Capt. Vai: says it can be gotten out ar.d delivered to the depot at the rate of 25 I I ! i cents per barrel, thus showing that the cost of transporting into this section will be very lij'ht. Tnere is no! doubt as to the existence of a 'sufficient amount 'of the marl to meet a very heavy demand. Save your money by buying our Buil i n, Supplies from Altaffer & Price, j f . . . Arraigned for Burelaiy. Daniel Richardsou, colored, was this morning arraigned in the Crimioal Court upon the ch-irge of burglary, which crime is alleged to have been committed in this city on the night of the 29 to ult, upon the premises of J. C Walker, colored. The prisoner being financial y unable to procure counsel, the Cot.rt assigned Messrs. E. S. Martin and Jno. D. Bellamy, attorney!, to conduct the defence. In accordance with the expressed wish df the counsel! for the State and defense the Judge appointed Saturday, the 1 I'M Inst , at 9 o'clock, as tbe time for the trial to commence. The Court then ordered I he Sheriff to summons a special venire of I i 1 i fifty men, from which to select a jury. Burglary is a capital offence according to the laws of this State, and if the pris oner is 'found guilty, the gallows will be his end,1 an less he is saved by the inter position of executive clemency. Pittsboro, N.0j Oct. 2nd, 1879.1 Editor Review: I Apropos of the recent Judgeship dia cussion, and as indicative of an under current of feeling here in Chatham, I enclose you the following lines, picked up on our streets a day or two ago: September, 20lh, 1879. It was a Judge npou the bench L&ia off this mortal coll; straight to nil his place there Was wtbred up a great turmoil. Who deals in Buncombe ever, j And swore for Chatham there should be a piace oi nonor, never! It may be well, ii i may tell. This mighty nepotist, i Tin re is a taliotiw lex May him 4ome dav reaint. He told the Gov. how there might be straight the Governor did think l nai unmer was the best. Chatham is a county great. Her people hate contention; But her streuerth is tweutv-on In the next Convention. I i As Six. Strangers in the city should not fail to visit the S sh Factory, foot of Walnut street. j Hard Work. Mr. Sol. Bear is back again having spent nearly a month in buying the large stock his house will carry. Everything is 'full of life and activity in the neigh borhood of their stores1 on Market street and it takes hard work, and until late at night, to keep up with the arrivals. Token ol Respect We notice the flag over the British Vice Consul's office ; and tbe colors of many of the vessels in port at half mast to day, out of respect, as we j are informed, to the memory of the late Captain Samuel Hooker, of the Br. barqua George Davis I Criminal Court. i The attention of the Court to day has been occupied for the most part in hearing arguments upon the question of jurisdic tion on the public road! eases, in con sequence of which, the following are the only cases tried and disposed of up to tbe prenent writing: State vs A. B. Liud, charged with car ryiug concealed weapons. Verdict not 2'lty. . ' State vs. Margaret McCumber, charged with assault and battery. Verdict not guilty. j The Inula Played Oct. Spanish cbufa is a failure. At least it is so pronounced by many who have given it what they consider a fair test. Some of tbe Pender county farmers who have tried it thoroughly for two seasons p ist tell us that they have planted the last of it. T-iey say that it not only does not make good meat 1 but that it drawa from the ground where it is planted t very particle. of life and sustenance, leaving an almost barren waste where was once fruit ful fields. It is true that the hogs take to it kindly but the fat of the meat raised on it is so soft that the potk, as such, is al most unsaleable and tbe meat, after being cured, will continue to drip as long as there is any grease left in it. One instance is related of a farmer who fed with it very extensively laot year and who has never ) et been able to get the lard into any thing but a liquid state. He calls it, very properly, bog oil. There will be very little of the Spanish cbufa planted in this section next year. i Thd Firemen's Anniversary. The parade of the White Fire Depart ment of this city, spoken of by us in yesterday's issue as being under progress at the time of our close, was carried: out according to'the programme laid down by th Committee, attracting the attention of crowds of people all along the route. The companies participating were the Wilmingtou Steam Fire Engine Co., the Howard Company and tbe Hook and Ladder Company, the latter with their truck and the others with their steamers, the apparatus being beautifully decorated with flowers and evergreens. A pleasing incident of .the procession was a photo graph taken of it by Mr. Orr, the photo grapher, in front of Yates book store, on Market street. At the close of the proces sion the members air repaired to toe Little Giant Engine House where a very a ice collation, with the palatable accom paniments bad been spread for their benefit. , . 1 New Advertisements.
