The January number of this excellent magazine is at hand, although a little late in the season. It presents a choice table of contents. The leading article, the first paper in the magazine, is a very carefully considered and a very well-written ar ticle by Mr. Cicero W. Harris on two prominent questions of the day. Mr. Har ris would do well, we think, to continue the subject. Prof . Von Jasmund, of this city, has a continuation of his article on great French statesman, Thiers, and Mrf Appleton Oaksmith presents us with a beautiful poem, 'Dust to Dust.' There are several other admirable articles in this number which we would notice more in detail but that space forbids. The South Atlantic is published in this city by Mrs. Cicero W. Harris at $3 a year. Tried by Jury Before a Magistrate. A retail liquor dealer on Nortb Water street was arraigned before a Magistrate yesterday and tried by a jury for neglect ing to give in the total amount of pur chases as required by law on the 1st ol January, 1880. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and the court sentenced the defendant to pay a fine of $50 and the costs in the case. From this decis ion the defendant took an appeal to the Criminal Court and furnished bond in tbr sum of $100 for his appearance at that time. The same party was arraigned to-day before the same Magistrate for refusing to exhibit his books to the Register of Deeds after having been notified to so do by the proper authority in writing. This, like the preceding case, was tried by a jury and a verdict of guilty rendered. The sentence of the court in this case was a fine of S25and costs. Counsel for defense then aske.d until to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock to decide whether he would take au appeal to the Crimiual Court or not, which request was granted anu de fendant recognized in the sum of$50 to appear at that hour. 1 ne Lecture Last Afght. The attendance at the Opera House last night to listen to the gifted Caro linian, Col. D. The lecture last evening disclosed more profundi of 1 thought, besides greater labor and research than the preceding one. while the eloquent lecturer's manner and recital seems to improve, like wine, with age. w e uo not mean to attempt, a crit icism or review of the masterly productioEj for nothing fchort ol vanity, we think would " p-ottipt any one who Uas not the scholarly attainments, (and few of. tbose we know who have them) of the distinguished speaker, to cm dertake the task Some there are wb hive hear!
