Apocalyptic Vision or St. John on the
i Isle of Patmos.
Mr. A. L. Butt's paintings, representiug
the Vision of St. John on tbe Isle ol
Patmos, were exhibited at the Opera
House last night and to an unusually largt
audience for .a panoramic exhibition.
As is known to our readers, the artist
who has placed these scenes upon canvass,
is a North Carolinian, and as "a prophet
is not without honor save in his own
country," etc., we must say, that if the
paintings above mentioned are not appre
ciated by our people" then certainly the
quotatioa above is literally true as to
North Carolinians, as far as our artists are
concerned.
i
Tbe scenes illustrating tbe vision of St.
John, are shown in twenty-one paintings,
containing over six thousand feet of can
vass,1 and is the labor of years ot
patience, skill and the expenditure of
m jch money, and present upon their face
the undeniable evidence of the work of a
born artist.
The views must be seen to be appre
ciated. It is therefore needless for us to
particularize. But the la?t fize f cenes are
simply magnificent. "The Beautiful Wo
man' "Woman of Babylon," 'The
Snarklins New Jerusalem." ''One of the
a -
Pearly" Gates" aud especially the "New
Jerusalem," are certainly scenes that tend
to awaken in the hearts of the most nn
concerned, a desire, or at lest a hope, to
inherit at laf t so blessed and beautiful
place. '
As an evidence of the appreciation of
the audience last night, the three last
cenes. notwithstanding their Biblical
nature, were greeted with hearty applause,
and so enraptured were a portion of the
audience at the last scene "The New
Jerusalem'' that 'sotre of them lingered
after the clone of the entertainment to gaze
up:n,its enchanting beauty.
W? take p'e.isure in recommending
i theset.paintings to the patronage of the
peopk not only of North Carolina, but
wherever they may be exhibited, not mere
ly as; a matter of State pride, but upon
their own intrinsic merit.

The Extra Session to be Called Any
how.
ItALKNiii February 21st, 1880.
Editor Daily Review :
The Governor has decided to call an
extra session of the Legislature to con
veoe in Raleigh on Monday, the 15th day
of March next.
Those who are disposed to run the
machine and fight it out on that line to
snit themselves, can now have an oppor
tunity to make a display in all their para
phernalia and war paint. Next January
would be too long to wait for a legisla
tive session, and twelve months ago be
fore the State had gone to the expense of
building the railroad across and through
the mountains, when the Legislature was
in session, was too soon for Mr JBest, and
his kind generous friends w o are goiDg
to plank $30,000 down for the oil for tbe
machine which they propose running. Of
course there will be no lobbying on, this
question of the sale of the railroad and
therefore Mr Bed and bis millionaires
will not have to spend any money in that
way.

The use of whiskey for rattesnake bites,

is demanded by the consumers. One snake
