C, a Sfcojto-Class Matter. A STRONG ARGUMENT. i State Treasurer Worth is decidedly in favor of selling the Western North Carolina Railroad, and ha written a let- ter to Governor Jams advising the slature in extra proposition to tnade by Mr. calling together of the Leg session to consider the purchase, which has been William J. Best, and others, aod gives bis reasons whjr the sale of , the road should be effected. The letter has been pub lished and extensively circulated through out the ,SAte. We have perused his arguments in favor of making the pro posed sale, and are forced to admit that they furnish the mosf t proloutid and substantial reasons we have yet seen why the road should not be sold Mr. Worth bases his reasons for th sale of this work of internal improvf-meni upon the disastrous resultj which hav . followed upon other works of like char acter, in which the State has bad an interest. The first case to! which he Cai!s attention is the Wilmington and Wel don Bailroad, which be . disposes of in the following extraordinary and (summary manner: Wilmineton and Weldon Railroad Company. Amount .of stock in this company, held by the State Board of Ed ucation, nd for many years a part oi tne School fund of the State, was $400,000. It was sold by the Board) in 1869 for $148,000, and invested bonds which are-worthless. Lost Most I irrecoverably seems to us, with our knowledge of those In power when the above sale was made, 'that if we had been an earnest advocne for the proposed sale of the road under con tideration, the history of that transaction would have converted us to an opposite opinion, or. at least, given' us cause to hesitate before we brought with the idea that, t0 "strike while the iron is "hot," is the better ) way. Others thltik that) t litre is !.r necessity for 4inev erent histe"' in the matter, and that delay would work no injury, and possibly might prove benefici.il 'o the interests of the State. We? are most emphatically of this laner lUass c iiiiiin we evil m iu haste, and are confident that those who J now so'earnestly vug, the sale will become awre of the fact. ble68 her ; ANNIVERSARY OFTiltfi FRAUD I ) i Three years ago to-day the greatest fraud that was ever practiced upon a free people was consummated by Rutherfoid B. Hayes the canting psalm singer and hypocritical civil service reformer taking possession of the highest office in th's great country of ours, through! fraud and intimidation; aud with the close of this ddy he will have drawn and appropriated to himself one hundred and fifty thousand i t - dollars of money rightfully belonging to a citizen of the State of New York, who was duly aud lawfully elected to the office of President of the United States by a mar jority of a quarter of a million of votes Will the people of this country allow the party who perpetrated this great fraud to place another man in the White House? We shall tee ' ' in special tax L st. lost! But it the circum argumcnt in tances of that'eale as an favor of this. The State had, in 1869, an Interest in the Wilmington! & Weldon R. R. .of $400,000. The party then oA pewer la the State sold that interest for $148,000 and the money was invested in special tax bonds which are dot worth a farthing, and in all human probability never will be. It was tbejmost gigantic fraud and swindle of all the frauds and swindles perpetrated by the rogues who then held high carnival over the affairs oi North Carolina. The party then in power had, fortunately, but a brief existence in the State, but in that short space of time it developed a ' faculty 'and facility for robbery and fraud hitherto un Oil . Saunders,; in his letter to the dear people, says: Whon the two women went Ik? fore Solomon claiming the chili, it was the false mother that proposed to cut the child in twain.-' Our goodr: friend, the Colonel, must have been in a big hurry when be wrote this. It was not t'ie false another who proposed to , cut '""the poor little baby in two It vrat King Solornon, the Wise, who made the proposition, but it was the bd .mother who consented to" the sale (we bg pardon, the dissection) and the good mother who refused.
