According to the New Yi-rk Evening

"doubted Iy 0,O0O Ve-w York Rppublicans
who are so ''prejudiced on the third
term qaes'.ien, that t'jey would not vote
for Grant under any circumstances I
states this as an interesting ano important

THE LIST OF THE GREEXBACKERS.
The Greenback party o North Carolina
held their Statf Convention at Greensboro
yesterday, the 5 li iuvt Jt was : expected
that Mr I)e La Ma'jr, the Greenback
m-imber f Co.ngrs would he present
b it he failM to ioit in an ajpearanca.
There irerc just four dtb yatm present.
From whence thy.c'ame we are unable to
state, but we katu that one cf the number
was a' Republican postulate-. They ap
jointed a Stale Executive Committee with
J. R. Winston, of Miltcn, as chairman
1 hey also appointed delegates '.o the Na
tional Greenback Conven'.inn, :. which maets
at Chicago, tnt sent them ui.tiammelled
by instructions. And Mia?.. wa3 all.
The fight 'or thy Gubernatorial ncmi
nation waxes warmer ind warmer. The
lines are drawn and it'ja to be between
Thoa. J. Jarvi3 on. '.he one nido and
Daniel G. Fowle on. the other. New
Hanover may safely bo cou
Judge Fowle as opposed to Gov. Jarvis
In the eutire delegation from this county
there are net three men who will
vote for Governor Jarvis. j Fol
lowing close on the tine's I of New
Hanover comes Wake county, which
ha inatructelfor Fowle and that
by an overwbeimiugmijority. As to the
second place on. the ticket Lt.-Gov 'Rob
inson, will go witnQov. Jarvis.
Robinson, it seems, was rot in TikI accord
with Gov. Jarvid and the baian e of his
ticket on the Western N. O. 11 j Li quts
tioa and hance there was a talk, at' one
time, of throwiug him overboard, but this
seems to have heen, wisely enough, since
reconsidered. We have no idea as to who
will be on the ticket with Ju.lge Fowle
for Lieutenant Governor. The State
Journal takes it for granted that it will be
Mr. Julius S. Carr, of Orange, but we
take it for -granted that it will not be. It
is more than, likely that the man will come
from beyond the Blue Ridge. Jt is not at
alt probable that he will be taken lroua the
centre. j

WASHINGTON. LEI IEK.
THE WATS AND MEANS COM
MITTEE. Appearances now indicate that there
may be iotas hopes of a reform in the
tariff, which may be of benefit: to the
country. The Ways and Means ConK
mittee, of which Fermando Wood, of New
York is Chairman, have agreed to place
the following artichsnpon the free list:
Salt in bags, barrels, packages or balk;
woollen rags, shoddy, mungo waste, and
flAckf,books,periodical8,all printed matter
engravings, bound or unbound; illustrated
books and papers, maps, charts, music,
aad music books, sumac, cod liver oil,
crude or refined, and crude petroleum.
We are glad that even this much has
been accomplished, for we are tree to
confess that we have had but little hopes
from any good which that Committee
would be willing to accomplish. Mr
Wood, the Chairman, has sat his face,
heretofore, very strongly against any
modification of tbe tariff which would
benefit the people. To refer a bill to his
committee has been, as a general thing, to
sound its dea'b. . knell. The Ways and
Moans Committee and the Calendar are
the two burial places from which there
is hardly a hope that a bill may ever be
resurrected.
' In speaking of these two methods of
putting a bill to Its everlasting rest, Mr.
McKenzie, of Kentucky, ia a speech de
livered in the Home of Representatives a
tew days since, said :
It were perhaps invidious to discriminate
for or against either ol the tombs of legis
lature to which I have referred. On the
whele, hewever, 1 ain iucliued to favor the
Calendar asbeiBg more thoroughly in ac
cord with my Democratic tastes. There
is a quiet and rest about it which is at
once suggestive and attractive. Repose
ought to form the essential quality of
monumental sculpture, and God knows
there Is a repose about the Calendar of
this House which meets the most exacting
requirements of art. Solemnity of feeling
and overpowering awe are excited by
viewing tnesoleauo depository of the dead.
It is astonishing to me that the Speaker of
the House and the members thereof dia
play do tremor when viewing this moonlit
grave-yard.
Id preferring the Calendar as a place
of interment for relief measures, I do not
wish to be understood as invidiously di
criminatiug againat the Ways and Meant.
Committee, tor I deire here and now to
say that a place of permanent reliable
