A True Snake Story.
Fr.m a-.perfectly reliable source we
learn of the killing of a tremendous snake
on Sunday, 'the 8th inst., at Maple Hill,
the residenco of Mr. Gibson James, in
Holly township, vPender county. It was
a rattlesnake and it was killed by a color
ed man by the name of Ben Pickett. jThe
snake was 7 feet longll inches round
and s inches across the head. The akin
has been etuffed, our informant tells us,
with the intention of sending it down to
us, to be placed on exhibition.

the Travelers Insurance Co. , of Hartford,
Conn., one of the solid institutions of the

years of its existence. Insurance against
accidents is becoming as common among
business men and mechanics as fire in
surance and its benefits have been demon
strated in our own State. Major Byrne
was insured under an accident .policy for
$2,500. Mr. John M. Springs, accident
ally shot in Charlotta a few years ago,
held a $5,000 policy;-joung McMillan,
who waB drowned last week in Raieigh,
had taken an accident policy for $1,000
only a few weeks previous. During the
year 1879 this Company paid nearly
$400,000 fo". accident losses alone. As a
