We are pleased to learn that the young crops in this section of,the country are now very promising. Indeed, man; farmers tell us that they seldom see them looking better at this season of the year. The corn, in especial, is thriving wonder fully, as any one to ay see for himself who will take a run of few miles on any of the roads leading out of this city. This warm weather, which is a means of dis comfort we all deplore so much, has done wonders for the growing crops, coming as it does so soon after the copious rami we hare had. The tuntry-folks.siy you can almost see the corn grow. With good seasons during the next two months, the yield hereabouts will be abundant. The canal Case. 00'"-' The case of which we have spoken heretofore in the columns of the Review. in which a number of residents ( Holly township were indicted for interfering with and obstructing operations oa the Duplin Canal, was to-day settled and arranged at Pender Court. These gentle men,' the defendants in the suit, claim that there was no intention to defy tho law; that the obstr action placed across the river interfered very materially with them and that they acted only after having received legal advice to the effect that the law in that respect was worth less and would not 'held water.' Acting under the advice of their present counsel, Messrs. Holmes and Nixon, they concluded to-day to submit the case and we presume that, under the circumstances, Judge Avery let them cfl on payment of costs. irurrlcane au t Half. A terrible hurricane, accompanied with a hail btorm, passed over a small portion of Pender county on last Friday. It originated near South Washington and then passed down to Cyprus Creek, its path being about five miles long and from one-half to three-fourths of a mile in width. The storm came up about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and Mr. G. F. Walker, whose residence and farm was in its path, tells us that it burst upon him with such foroe that the house rocked on its foundations and nearly every pane of glass in the windows was shattered. The hail stones which fell i were very large, some of them, it is said, actually being as large as a lady's fist. It wag the most severe blow which has visited that sec tion during the past forty years. List of Letters.
