We have now in our office tLe stuffed skin of ;a monster which measured 7i feet and had 13 rattles when killedand now there comes a report of the capture of his big brother from the same section. A friend at Maple Hlil writes us a repoit of the captur It took place last Monday and the monster was found by Benj Pick ett, colored, the same man who killed the first snake, on the road near the residence of Mr. Jacob K James. The valiant Ben, rendered hazardous by previous encounters, determined to take this snake alive and after a desperate struggle suc ceeded , He then tied him to Mr. Gibson James' wagon,1 which he was driving at the time, and started with him for home, some eight miles distant, . But the snake could "nt see it in th sel imps and preferiDg death to captivity be struggled so Tio leutly as to choke himself to death. This monster snake measured 8 feet in length and was 14 inche around the body. We trust that his skin and rattles may be preserved : Physicians freely preMiibe the new Food Medicine, Malt Bitters, ' because more nourishing, strengthening and puri fying than all other forms of malt or medi cine while free from the objectiors urged against malt liquors. 4w , 1 : : r Tbermometricai. Jnl Abunt a Failure. There was a crude attempt made last night to get up a Garfield ratification meeting at the "Court House, outfit was next door to a failure. There was a band of music on band and 'several colored Republican orators essayed to tell all they knew bout it, but it evidently did'at amount to very mnch when it was told. It was plain that there was more enthu siasm about the music than about any other part cf the performance. Returned Delegates The train which came down the W. & W. R. R. lastnight brought back to their homes many of t&e" delegates from this section who have been in attendance this week on the State Convention in Raleigh. Some returned via Hamlet, and others are yet to arrive. Those who are here rep resent tbe Convention as large, enthusias tic ard harmonious, well-behaved, well officered and well-controlled, a fact easily explained, as only Democrats attend Democratic Conventions. But they were all tired, hungry, dirty and dry when tbfy got back home. . A Narrow Escape. Little Stewart, the four-year-old son of Mr. P. Heinsberger, made a narrow es cape from serious injury yes'erday aftei noon. at his father's residence, on Third street, near Mulberry. While playing on the upper piazza, a distance of about 15 feet from the ground, he fell throogh a broken place in tbe banisters to the yard beneath. For a whileat was thought that the little fellow was seriously injured, but Dr. Love soon arrived and dispelled the fears of the distracted parents. The child was only bruised, and is up and about to-cay. It was a narrow escape. The loss is "1 i estimated at 8L&00, it he larger amount being on turpentine and roein . and the damages to tbe distillery being com par ar tivdy light. The Savannah New 9 of a recent date has a filler report. It says: . Testerday tbe citiaens of the northern portion of Brunswick were thrown into panic, almost, by the conflasration of Wil der & Co's turpentine works. It seems some ladies were present for tbe purpose of witnessing the manufacture of rosin, and it is likely that the workmen, through their courtesy and attentions to the visitors, faifed lo percnive in time ttattbe liquid was about to overflow. and hence the catas age to tbe company rophe. The dam aad Mrs. Golden (who lost her two houses and their con teets) is estimated at about $20,000. No insurance. Tbe firei' company was 00 hacd, but as usnalj found their efforts ineffectual from the "difficulty of getting the heavy antiquated fmacbine at a fire in time, and the trouble- of keeping enough men on tbe brakes to throw the wa'er.
