Another Home Struck by Lightning-
X arrow Escape of the Inmates
Damage to Property.
It was only yesterday that we recorded
the fact of a serious acjideot by lightning,
and new we are called upon to-day to
chronicle a s ill more serious accident by
the same medium, but luckily, we are
hppy to announce, attended with no loss
oi life.
During the prevalence of the thunder
;torm here this morning.a bout 11 o'clock
the residence of Mr. Samuel P. Collier, on
Front 8'reet, directly opposi'e the offices
of the W. t W. and Wr O. & A . Rail
roads, was atruek by lightning and consid
erable damage done to the front ef the
building and the plastering on the inside.
There Is no lightning rod to the house
but the front of the building la surmount
ed by an ornamental piece of iron railing
wnica it is supposed must have attracted
the electric fluid to the build In sr. Mr.
Collier's bed room is on the second floor.
facing on Front street, and In at the win
dews to this room the dangerous current
passed, tearing the bricks.from all around
the front of the window on the outside In
its course and scattering plastering and
bricks around promiscuously oa the In
side. Near the window stood a marble
top bureau with a large looking glass; this
was torn to pieces and the glass shattered
to atoms while the furniture of the room
was all more or less injured by the jar of
the concussion and the falling bricks and
mortar. Ji the roorn adjoining Mr.
Collier's bed chamber, which Is con
nected by an archway through the
partition wall was, Mr. C.'s youngest
child, asleep in a trond!e bed, while
its nurse was standing In the same room
near by; the shock knocked the servant
down, and it is supposed that a falling
brick must have struck the girl on the
head, which has left a gash some three
inches in length on her forehead. ' But
dazed as the ssrvant was by the shock
she trawled to the bed and dragged the
little child from It as far as the door
which she was vainly endeavoring to open
when assistance came and forced the door
open. Fortunately for the inmates of
the house a gas jet protruded from the
wall right near the window where the
electric current entered, and on this the
fluid passed from the room down along tl
pipe Into the ground, melting the lead
pipe around the metre In its passage and
igniting the gas at the metre, which hap
pened to be turned on at the time In
the rear part of the house, in a sort of at
tic compartment, tne plastering wls
koecked off in two different places but
an examination of the roofabove disclosed
el the fact that there was evidence of any
damage there and as the door leading in
to this apartment was closed at the time
of the disaster in the 1 front room it Is fair
to presume that it was the jar caused by
the explosion in the front room which
oaused the plastering to tumble down.
Mr. Collier's whole family, consisting of
his wife and four children, were in the
house at the time of the accident, and
none were icjured. The balance of the
family were In other pa. of the house,
while Mr. Collier was seated in hfs office,
which is right across the street from his
dwel'ing, when the terrible clap of thun

caused him to jump from,' ls seat, aid
looking a cross-to his house he saw nothing
but a cloud of smoke and dust rnd falling
brick ; frightened nearly to death for the
safety of his family, Mr. C. dashed across
the street, into his house and up the stairs
o bis child's room, when he forced the
dopr open and found the servant on the
floor with the child 'u her aims cry'rjj,
while the scattered , bricks around gate

Seizing bis ?ufnt iu h's r -tr he at once
removed it to a place of safety, and then
proceeded to look after the rest of his fanr'ly
whom happilj he found ta have escaped
entire iijury, with the exception of being
pretty badly frightened. The damage U
thebu'ding s probably seme $0 or $50
The dam age to Mr. Collier's fun Itce will
probably reach $25 or $30. It was truly a
marvelous and miraculous escape fh xa
death by the whole inmates of the house.
