There seems to be no doubt of the election of Plaisted but bis actual majority is not yet ascertained. The latest information will be -found on the first page of this issue.in special dis patches received after this side of the pa per had been put to press . A GERMAN B0031 FOR HANCOCK. The New York pacers 6tate that the . German mass meeting at Cooper Insti tute Friday evening was the largest of the camnaieu ia that city, with the. exception of the great mass meeting of July 23 at the Academy of Music. Hon. Augustus Belmont presided iu the Insti tute, and there were large overflow meet ings outside. The speakers included many prominent Germans who have heretofore acted with the Republican W. H. ENGLISH, party. THE SOLID SOUTH. The South, says the Buffalo Courier, constitutes the leading or sole issue of Re publicans in Northern political contests. The white people of the South are do uoonced as rascals and "banditi' though the latter term is no longer used by almost every Republican stump Speaker. They are abused and made od ou3 as if they were public enemies, if not enemies of the human race. An elec toral contest is represented virtually as a war of the North asainst the South. Hav ing done 'all' this the Republicans affect surprise or indignatloo at the "solidity" of the South. If they should win by these methods the' -South is likely to he come mere ''solid' than ever aod the same contest will have to be fought over four years hence. Fortunately, thesfgns of 'the times point to a different result, namely, tfce defeat of sectionalism by the defeat of the Republican party. - . -Til SI COTTON MARKET.
