Chloride of Lime as a Disinfectant One pound re quires three gallons of water, use the clear solution. To puri fy rooms, sprinkle on the 'floor, and, needful, on the bed linen. Infected clothes should be dipped in it, just before they are washed. It purifies night com modes, water closets, &c. It may also be used in its pure state. For butcher stalls, fish markets, slaughter houses, sinks, and wherever thero are offensive putrid gases, sprinkle it about, and in a few days the smell will pass away. If a rat or mouse should die about the house, and send forth an offensive gas, place some chloride of limeHn an open vessel near the place were the nuisance is, and it will soon- purify the atmosphere. Chloride1 6t lime in a room will causa iron or steel to rust rapidly. The Yacht Race The slowest on Record rT he re was the Qui T Ive? The regular September race of the Caro lina Yacht Club was . drifted over the Wright&vftle course on yesterday. The yachts Restless, Flirt, Lizzie and Ripple entered tor the race, but as there was no wind the yachts drifted through the course and the Ki ti vie would have stood a good showing for -the champion flag. There was no wind at all, only a squirt or two from the East, and the Ripple came m about half a mile ahead of the others. The Ripple made the course in 2 hours 48 minutes and 45 'seconds. The rules of the Club say that the race shall be made in 2 hours and 30 minutes There was some misinterpretation of the rules by the Regatta Committee and Commodore Wiggins refused to give up the champion flag. To-day, we believe the committee agreeed to give it to the Ripple, though it Is thought that the race Is an "off race," and none is entitled to it. The race of yesterday is the slowest race on record, and if the Ripple gets the flag it will be by the skin of her teeth. - Scrofulous swellings, carbuncles and boils, blotches, pimples and eruptions, enlarged glands, internal soreness, torpid liver, and general clogged condition of the system, all yield in due time to na ture's sovereign remedy Dr." Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. The Oornent Band having sent their musical instruments on to the North for repairs, it is feared will not be able oa this account to discourse any music for the occasion, un less the instruments arrive by, termor row morning's train, which we ,have heard is both hoped for and looked for by the members of the band but there is no certainty 'about this, however. The weather will in all probability be propiU iou8,tbe darkness of night will be illumined by tho moon's pale rays, and will'serve an excellent opportunity f:r many a young gallant to escort his lady fair to the pretty grounds in front of the stand, where we learn ample accommodations will be made in the way cf seats. But of this, candor compels us to add we do not approve, we like to see as many men as can possibly go to a Damocratic meeting, bat we feel constrained to say that we think that "the ladies will adorn a parlor in a far more graceful manner than they can possibly appear at a political meeting in th9 open air. -We hope our friends from Ponder, Columbus and other adjoining counties will not fail to lend us the light of their countenances on this occasion. The Dem ocrats of this city and county we expect to see turn out in full force. Keep the ball ia motion. The R- K- Xews in Charlotte- Ths recent Railroad Combination in this State U attracting very general at tention in this and adjoining States, be low we give an extract from the Charlotte Observer of yesterday's date, which is as follows: .. There ia no longer any doubt that Mr. J M. Robinson, president of the Seaboard & Roanoke Raleigh & Gaston and BaL t r;t 3 t . ebh & Augusta Airline .ttauroaus nas entered with all his roads into the com bination first formed between the Rich mond & Danville Railroad and the At iantic Coast Line. . It was at first thought that He was only into it to the extent of the Seaboard Railroad, from Portsmouth to Weldon which is part of the Coast Line, but it has since been learned that both his other roads are included. This looks like there is not to be much com petition for freight in this section of the country for the presant at least. Mr Sol Haas has charge of the freight department of the whole concern.
