Specials to tho Charleston JXew8 and Courier tell of disastrous fires at George town and. at Kingstree, the first -on Fri day and the othar on Saturday. We clip from that paper relative to the George town fire: So far five buildings have been utterly destroyed, as follows: H. Kaminski's warehouse, the Winyaw steam fire en gine houso, B. I. Hazzard'd turpentine shed, Smith & - Andrew 8 sail establish ment, and an ice house Kept by Mrs. Fannie Easterling. . This last named buildings.was tha first to catch fire. Mrs. Eaterlingxand her eon- were in the Ice house when the-. fire occurred. Mrs. Easterling was burned up in the flames; her son, Joe, jumped out of the window and escaped unhurt. The flames have crossed the river, and thev entire row of buildiDga over there will no doubt be de stroyed. The engines are crossing over, however, and they may succaed in saving some of tho buildings. All that is leit of Mrs. Easterling is about sixteen ' in ches of her body. ' : At Kingstree the depot, including the tslegraph office, was destroyed, with about one hundred bales of cotton and a great deai of freight. The fire originated on tho platform where V large quantity of cotton was lying adjoining the main building. Everything, being vory dry, tho fire spread with such rapidity that it was impossible to suppress it, and in a few minutes tho cotton, building and platform were in a sheet of flame. The 1038 in cotton, building, freight, &c, will amount to $12,000 or $15,000. It is said that a Little negro boy struck a match on a cotton .tie which ignited tho exposed lint and caused the fire. Ilia Honor, Judge Meares, heard a habeas corpus case this morning before the regular docket was taken up, which con sisted of a little colored girl some 7 year of age, who had been bonnd to Dr. En nett, of Pender, and afterwards taken away by the mother of the child. Capt. W. S. Normeut, as counsel for the plain tiff, argued the case before llis Honor, who rendered & deciaon in favor of re storing the child to Dr. Ennett, where she legally beloned. The attention of the Court after this case has been for the most part of the day occupied with one case where a po lice officer, who arrested a party some months ago, has been arraigned upon the charge of assault and battery. . Prua.ni to a published notice from the Chairman of the Domocratic Eiecu tiye Committee there was a gathering of some of thi Democrats from the various ward-at the City Uall. at 8 o'clock la.t night. Mr. F. II. Darby, Chairman of the Executive Committee, called the meeting to order and sta'el the object for which the meeting had been called, aodrrqnes' ed Mr. C. ,H Robinson to occai ibis chair. Jr. llobinsou having taken the chair stated the next business was the appointment of a Secretary. Mr. John J. Fowler , was put in nomination and elected to that positian. Mayor Fishblate then addressed the meeting upon the importance of prompt and , proper organization for the contest which was now only four weeks off. Mr. Darby offered a resolation which, alter an amendment, offered, by Col. Jas. G. Burr, read rs follows: He8olvedt That' it is the sense of this meeting that the several Ward Presidents be requested to ca"'. their several Wards together at their r 3p ?tive places of meeting, some time durlDg this week, for the purpose of enrolling members and more thoroughly organizing the Wards, and that after th;s week the several Wards meet oace a week until the day of election. Pending the adoption of the resolution tho plan of arranging for the Ward meet ings and the objects to be attained, as well as the importance of speedy and effective organization, was discussed by Messrs. Wo commend this sen sible Ulk to our boys: Nearly evry day the merchants of Home are applied to by young men for clerkships, and other situations, in vain, for nearly everywhere they are told that 'every placed is filled and still every day applicants continue to pour in. On the contrary, however, nearly every exchange we read contains advertisements for vari ous kinds of mechanics, including car penters, masons, painters and others. Would it not, therefore, be a good idea for some of these discouraged young men to learn-some useful trade, by wbich they can earn an independent living? Work of any kind is honorable and a good trade never goea amiss. It is frequently one's best friend aud is a staff on which the rising'generatiou can lean with confidence. Good mechanics rarely ever go begging lor work, and they usually earn much better salaries than clerks or salesmen. . ilow to get SJcti.
