Th-3 following letter, published yester ",liv found a quick response in Brooklyn .nr ih,-. members of the veteran Corps of the Thirteenth Regiment: T,.. tit;: Editor of The Herald Sir: At the battle of the Mine, at Pe-"r-Wburg, 1 HM, 1 was Captain of Com pany I,Seventeenth Itogiment, South Carolina Vol u uteers. and in this desper ate hand-to-hand fight, a Capt. Sims of a Sew York regiment (1. think from Ufooklvn), as. he -mounted the " breast works immediately in front of my com pany was killed by Sergeant La Mott. Capt. Sims' sword ha ever since been in my possession, and 1 have frequently thought of returning it; for it should be possessed by his family, as a glorious heirloom of the soldier whose conduct on this occasion was as heroic as ever illus trated any battlefield. Now, when half -ths North and the whole south are united in their efforts to bury animosities of the past by elect ing a Federal General to the Presiden- cy who will know no North or South n the administration of the Governme nt, it would be unpatriotic in ma 10 retain any longer this.rclic of the war. I Know no surer means of discovering the ad dress of some relative of Capt. Sims than through the columns' of the Jleratd. 15y publishing this, you will confer .a srreat favor on the family of a galla nt Federal sold.er, whose name they would not willingly let die. . James F. Steele. Cl'kkto.n s Store, Laucaster County, H. (J. . Capt. Sims was well known in Brook lyn, and some of his old comrades yester day telegraphed to Mr. Steele that his surviving relative is Miss Lucy" Sims, who, after her father's death, was adopt ed as the daughter of the Thirteenth Regiment. Capt. Sims was a member of Company B of the Thirteenth Kegi ment, commanded by Capt. Sprague. In 1861, when the regiment went to the front, he was appointed a Lieutenant and he served during the three months' enlistment. When he returned to Brooklyn he raised a company and im mediately joined the Forty-first New ork Volunteers. The regiment was attached to liurnside's Army Corps, and Capt. Sims fought gallantly in every engagement, at length meeting death at Petersburg. The account of his brave ry, as recited by the ex-Confederate, is fully corroborated by his comrades. . His body was recovered "and it now resfs in Greenwood Cemetery. Uis daughter Lucy, then 12 years o.d, was made an orphan bv his death, Jer mother being dead. The Thirteenth fog:raent at once adopted her as its child, and its members voluntarily as ed themselves one dollar each a'year to educate and support her. A veteran jember of the regiment, known as '"the "'""i, IU( K filzirrrn rl hpr nnil lrr- tir. ) ears nas watched over her. This is fully exemplified in the de monstration that so common a pasture weed as smart-weed, or water-pepper, possesses medicinal properties which, when combined with essence of .Jamaica Ginger and other efficacious vegetable extracts, as in Dr. Pierce's Compound Extract of Smart-Weed. It constitutes a, mo?t potent remedy for bowel affec tions as diarrhoea, dysentery, flux. etc. It is also an efficacious medicine to break up fevers and inflammatory attacks, and for the alleviation of pain.
