VOL. V WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY, OCTOBER
The Philadelphia police have just
been assessed $ 8,697 for Republican
campaign . purposes.
Nine states have voted since the
irst of August, and the republicans have
.made gains in one-- Indiana.
There are thirteen million organized
nihilists in Russia, according to Hart
mann's figures. They ought to be able
to make it mighty lively for the connu
bial old czar.
The Oregon legislature has passed a
constitutional amendment to authorize,
unlimited wcrran suffrage. This will
undoubtedly have to be ratified by the
people before it becomes operative.
Capt. James B. Eads, the projector of
the ship railroad acro33 the Isthmus of
Darien, says that there is every prospect
of the success of the scheme, i and that if
the work was once started he could com
plete it within three years. 1
The State Fair at Raleigh has closed.
It has been a very successful affair. The
numbers in 'attendance) were very large
and the exhibit was very fine. There
were very few exhibitors from th's section
and not many from this city in attend
ance.
Mr. "VY. W. Corcorari, of Washington
who is now tottering about in his eighty
third year, will probably soon rest in. the
magnificent cemetery which he presented
to the capitol city. -During his life he
has given away 3,000,000 in public
benefactions and $1,000,000 in private
charities, er about three-quarters of his
entire estate. It was a fortune so wel

Col. TJIT. B. Thompson, superintendent
of railway mail service, has completed
his annual report for the last fiscal year
It shows that there are now covered by
this service 108,640 miles of railroad
and steamboat routes, an increase of 5,329
miles since last year. The number of
w
pieces of , mail matter handled by the
employes of this division during the
year reached the enormous aggregate of
2,670,000,000. The report asta lor in
creased appropriations to meet the con
stantly increasing demands of the ser

Mr. Garfield i3 very good at denying,
and his ability in denying a thing is only
equalled by hi3 ready facility for swear

his Credit Mobil ier denial : it will not

The Utica Observer says that there
are auu.uuu more .democrats .in mis
country than there are Republicans.
There arc really more Democrats in each
of the Northern States of Connecticut,
New IIampshiae,New York, New Jer
sey, Indiana, Colorado, Nevada and Cal
ifornia than there are Republicans.
These Democrats can give Winfield
Scott Hancock a splendid majority, and
enjoy a Democratic administration, if
they choose to do. so.
The Raleigh Wews and Observer
makes a resume of the situation in this
State. It says that in the first district
Latham's friends are confident of his
election. In the second, while Hon. W.
H. Kitchin is hopeful, yet the odds are
so largely againt him that we can only
predict that Hancock and Jarvis will
get better relative results there than
Tilden and Vance did four years ago.
In the third district we understand a
great effort is being made against Shackel
ford, and that secret circulars have been
circulated 'intended to injure him,5 but,
on the whole, liis district is considered
safe if the true Democrats turn out and
vote for the nominee. The State and
national ticket will hold its own there.
.-DAILY
i
The fourth district will give Cox about
2,200 majority. We will carry every
county in the district. Gen. Scales,
Maj. Dowd, Col. Armfield and Gen
Vance will be elected by large majori
ties. ! ' r , ,
While we are certain of carrying the
State and the Legislature, the majority
is by no mean3 determined. It will de
pend la-gely on how the people will turn
out. If they will arouse themselves and
make a great effort the figures will run
up well in the tens of thousands.

The case f Julia Ford, colored, and
Joseph Marshall, white, continued from
Wednesday morning, was heard by the
Mayor this morning, j Tho testimony in
troduced in court proved that the de-
luuuant, jnarsnan, was on tho woman s
premises by her permission ; that she
was the aggressor, and made the first
assault on Marshall, and that the blow
he struck the woman which cashed her
forehead, was in self-defence, and after
the said Marshall had received so.veral
blows from the woman. The evidence
convicted the woman of being intoxi"
cated and assaulting Marshall without
just provocation. The Court fined the
prosecutor in the case, Julia Ford, 10
and recognized her until Tuesday next'
at which time she is ordered to pay the
tine. This being the only case on docket,
