The smallest bell of Cologne Cathe
dral received a few months ano serious
injury. It was taken down and sent to
Gosse's foundry at Dresden to be recast.
It had been originallycast in 1418, and

court organist says that the tonCj is now
perfect. There are three o!ther- bells.
One i3 the great "Oaiserglocke," the

While we are waiting to hear the re
sult of the great battle it will not be
amiss to glance at the last forecasts at
headquarters. We clip the following
fromSu4day's World: 1
The following despatches were receiv
ed about midnight Saturday at the
Democratic National Headquarters:
"Huntington, Ind., Oct 30 Indiana
is certain for Hancock. Telegraph it to
the country. . . -
"W. J. HiLLiG an, Member State Com
raittee." '
"Denver, Col., Oct 30 At an . im
mense meeting, followed by a torchlight
procession two miles long, composed
chiefly of workingmen, the following
resolution was aaoptea amia me wnaesi
enthusiasm: , '
" 'That the workinsrmen of Denver,
seconding those of San t Francisco, ap
peal to the workingmen of the country to
help protect ( prosperous Colorado, by
votincr for Hancock, from the ruin1 that
has overtaken California. Chinese are
flocking to, bur young State, and will not
only take our work from us but, by man
ufacturing here articles we now buy from
the East, will ruin the market of the
United States of America for our 'East
ern manufacturers.'"
The National Democratic Committee
received several depaches yesterday
from Western States,1 asking if there is
any . truth in the report circulated in the
Kepublican newspapers that tomptroiier
Kelly is acting with the Republicans of
New York State. Mr. Kiflly, who has
already denounced the report as a slan
der, said yesterday afternoon : '.'These
rumors are preposterously ) false. All
Democrats, including every Democrat in
. ammany Hall, are united la their sup
lort of the Hancock electoral! ticket. If
port 1
General Hancack s election aepena upon
.a .
the city and . State of New York, then
his election is assured. " New York City
can be safely counted upon for at least
60,000 Democratic majority for Han
cock." , I
The members of the State Committee
who were at the St.. James Hotel "yester
day carefully revised the figures and es
timates sent in frofn the workers in the
several counties, andfgive as their con
clusion the following statement:
"New York City will give not less
than 65,000 majority for Hancock,
Brooklyn will give 20,000. The State
is good for 30,000 majority. Tire party
is thoroughly united and lull of enthusi
asm." . '
New Haven, -Conn., October 31.
All indications point to a complete
Democratic victor in Connecticut next
Tuesday. New Haven will give Han
cock 3,000 majority and the State not
less than 5,000. The Democrats have
been making 'a splendid canvass. Vol
unteer' committees are organized "all
over the State to work for Hancock in
every town. The Democrat c State
ticket may ran behind Hancock's vote
but it wilt be elected by 3,000 majority.
- I ' '
Democrats will gain one if not two Con
gressmen, and have an even chance on
the Legislature.
Philadelphia. October 31. Chair
man Dill, of the Democratic State Com
mittee, and Senator Wallace have
digested reports from nearly every coun
ty which warrant the expectation that
the Hancock electors will have a major
ity of 5,350. This allows Philadelphia
to the Republicans by 15,000 and Alle
gheny by 8,000, making the aggregate
Republican majorities 53,150, while the
aggregate of Democratic majorities is
put down atj8,500.

The Election

progressed steadily and fairly in the
