The Daily 1 JOSH. T. JAMES, Editor & JProp. WIUHWGTOrT . K. FRIDAY. OEO&MBEB 3. 1840. Ehtxbed at Wilmington, X. SLa.ttxb.1 THJC POSTOFFICB AT C, A SBOOND-OiO-SS Queen Victoria has promised Prince William, who will be her first married grandson, and his bride, Princess Aug usta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein Son- derburg-ABgustenburg, to be present at j their weddinz. in February next. It is well known that Princess Augusta Vic toria is not a rich princess, iler o v. ry will be smaller than tlmt of many a city merchant's daughter. George Bancroft, the historian, was eighty years of age on the 3rd ult. lie graduated at the Harvard University Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkan The New York papers state that the Harpers disposed of their 20,000 fifteen- cent edition of the Eail of Beaconfield's 'Endymion" the first day of its publi cation, and the next day filled orders for 10.000 more. The prospect is that it will be widely distributed over the Uni ted States within the next ten days. It is now thought that the, recent se vere weather, which seems to have been general throughout the South, will cause a marked decrease in the sum total ex pected from the cottou crop. Iu Mem phis the Cotton Exchange seems to have reduced the assertion to figures, and they claim that the decrease in yield will be 28 per cent. A Memphis dispatch says : November is generally the busiest month for picking, but this month the weather has been such that laborers have not been able to work in the fields but five day3 during the past four weeks. This state of aflairs not only exists with in the district of the Memphis Cotton Exchange, but throughont the States of: at the asre of twenty, and subse i quently went to Germany, whesc he made the acquaintance of Goethe. It i3 re ported that a new work will soon be published by Mr. Bancroft entitled "History of the Formation of the Con stitution of the United States from the. Treaty of Peace with Great Britain to the Inauguration of Washington as President" On Wednesday the ten electoral votes of North Carolina were cast for Han cock and English. Gen. James Madison Leach was made Chairman of the Board and Mr. D. A. Covington the Secre tary. Mr. Busbce will carry the vote to Washington. The following telegram was sent to Gen. Hancock: ; Raleigh, N. C, December 1, 1880. 77ie Board of Electors of North Car olina to Gen. Win field S. Hancock Greeting: sas, Louisiana ana eastern lexas. Within this vast territory a million bales or more of cotton are annually raised, and the damage will cut short the crop lully 2o per cent, ot estimates made- in the early part of the season. There is yet more than ODe third of the crop in the fields ungathered, and much of this will be lost. There willy we think, be some loss, but not a heavy one, in North and South Carolina. The fact of repeated rains and damp weather, with but very little of sunshine during the month of No vember, will be sure to have a disastrous effect. ' Alexander h3 Great wept because there were no more I 1.1s to conquer, but the proprietors of Pr Pierce 8 .Family Medicines, who have found it necessary to establish a branch of the World's Dispensary at London, England, in order to supply from that great commercial emporium these reme dial blessings to foreign countries, where they are largely in demand, do not share the great conqueror's sentiments, as their conquests are of diseases and have made happy not only the' conqueror tut the people who employ them. V The New York Bulletin says the de cadence of our commercial marine is not a gradual dry rot; in point of fact, it is rapidly progressive. In this respect there is no mistaking the statistics of the register of the treasury, jast submitted Though defeated, the heart of ourpeo-J in his annual report, covering the opera- pie is with you. Their admiration for yor patriotism and devotion to civil lib erty is unabated. North Carolina to-day gives you her ten votes for President ' (8igned) J. M. Leach, President. D. A. Covington, Secretary. It is sad to think that at this moment, when change is so scarce, $47,488,106 are stored away and lying idle in the treasury vaults of the government out of $72,847,750, coined since February, 1878, or less than three years ago. Only $25,359,644 have been placed in circula tion. The government now owns two thousand tons of silver and the quanti ty is constantly increasing at the rate of fifty-three tons per month. Why cannot the coin be . turned loose for thcv benefit of the eountry? The South, at least, could Stand a goodly addition to the scanty moiety that has been doled out to her. tions of the past fiscal year. According to these, the total tonnage of the country exhibits a decrease of 101,566 tons. Steam tonnage has increased 35,386 ton3 and canal boat tonnage 2,852 tons; while sailing tonnage has decreased 56,555 tons and the barge tonnage 83,250 tons. During the year, the amount of ship building has been less gby 35,620 tons than that of 1 879. The increase in steam tonnage is chiefly visible in additions to out coasting vessels. In the foreign trade' we are doing nothing worth speaking of. It . does net appear that any orders have been executed for the European carrying trade. At this rate, it is clear, American shipbuilding ere long will become one of the lost arts. In Berlin the average number of horses killed forjfood this year has been 450 per month, while last year it was 350. All the horses eaten are killed in a central A gentleman saw an old Highlander one day nsmng with a bent pin. He said to the man, "Fish will never be caught with that." "Ay, they will," slaughter-honse, and each horse, before ytl CJ 11 it is killed is, carefully examined by two veterinary surgeons. At the present time the batcher pays about 42 marks or f 10.50, for a piece of horseflesh weigh ing from 250 to 300 pounds, but he re tails it at 40 pfenning (or about 10 cents) a pound for the filet, 25 pfenning per pDand for other pieces, and 20 pfenning lor parts only fit to be made into sausage and as horseflesh is naturally very dry, a good deal of it can only be utilized by being mixed with lard and converted in to sausages, which are, it is suspected, largely consumed by persons who are little aware of what they are eatinar. ' In one or two other German towns the con euraption of horseflesh is, m proportion to their population, even larger than in Berlin. A gentleman residing in this city who has been dealing in fish for many years past, in commenting on an article pub lished by us a few weeks since on the in reduction of the German Carpinto North Carolina, tells us that it is a very rapacious fish, and that he does not think their introduction hero will prove profita ble. He says that they will destroy any and all other fish they can get at and that in a few years, wherever introduced they will be almost the only denizens of the water. In Germany, he says, tnese nsn are much esteemed. Over there they are bred in v ponds especially adpted to the purpose- aud' where no other fish are introduced. He thinks that it will pay better eventually fcr the Fsih Commissioner to devote all of his time and energies to fostering the growth and production of natives of the State. By a larse majority the people of the United States have declared their faith in Kidney-Wort as a remedy for all the diseases of the kidneys and liver; some, however, have disliked the trouble of preparing it nom the dry form. For such a new candidate appears in the shape of Kidney-Wort in Liquid Form. It is very concentrated, is easily taken and is equally efficient as the dry. Try it. Louisville Post. It is a .scientific combination of the medicinal princi ples and curative virtues-of the finest drugs, chemically united, of such power as to insure the greatest possi ble efficiency, and Yrv""Ty"v n y unuormitv ot re- s7Aj A JtktlU, suits. It strikes at the foundation of all pulmonary diseases, affording prompt relief and rapid cures, ' and is adapted to patients of any age or either sex. Being very palatable, tho youngest children take it readily. In ordinary Coughs, Colds, Sore Throat, Bronchitis, Influenza, Clergyman's. Sore Throat, Asthma, Croup, and r Catarrh, the effects of Ayeu's Cherry Pectoral are magical, and multitudes are annually preserved from serious ill ness by its timety and faithful use. It should be kept at hand in every house hold for the protection it affords in sud den attacks. In Whooping-cough and Consumption there is no other remedy so efficacious, soothing, and helpful. Low prices are inducements to try some of the many mixtures or syrups, made of cheap and ineffective ingredi ents, now offered, which, as they con tain no curative qualities, can afford only temporary relief, and are sure to disappoint the patient. Diseases of the throat and lungs demand active and effective treatment; and it is dangerous experimenting with unknown and cheap medicines, from the great liability that these diseases may, while so trifled with, become deeply seated or incurable. Use Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and vou may confidently expect the best results. It is of acknowledged curative power, and is as cheap as its careful preparation and fine ingredients will allow. Emi nent physicians, knowing its composi tion, prescribe it. The test of half a century has proven its certainty to cure all pulmonary complaints not already beyond the reach of human aid.
