A Colored Democrat Kuklulud-
Fred Shaw, a well-known colored man
ol Whiteville, and a staunch Democrat,
was Kukluxed on last Saturday night,
about one mile below Whiteville Depot
and badly injured, He was set upon by
two men of hi3 own race and cut and
badly beaten. He would probably have
been killed had he not succeeded in
making his escape from them. As it is
he is very badly injured although his life
is not thought to be endangered. The
assailants will most likely bo captured
and if so they will get all the law allows
them.

New Yacht.
Mr. R. H. Beery commenced on Sat
urday to build a yacht for a gentleman
from Massachusetts, who is in this city
on a visit. The new craft, when com
