VThtt Mr. Christian ej Sail. 1 1 1 The Wasbfiglbn HepubUcah "quotes I Uthe wife of Minister Christiaifcy as mak ing" in substance the following statement in regard to her relations with the wit ness Giro, a synopsis of whose damaging 'evidence was given jeaterdaj: I "she had returned home quite sick. .She cnotracted a severe aold, besides hav ing been for the past two weeks under considerable nervous excitement, which has almost completely prostrated her. She admits meeting Mr. Giro oa the steamer and coming to New York with him on' the same bo.- After she reach ed home, in Hit cityy he wrote- frequent ly aud telegraphed for permission to wome and set bcr; fcsbe wroue back' tell ing him not to come, lie did not need her, but came, and on Christmas, 1879, he caliod at her house. Before leaving he offered to make her ft present of the jewels, and, she declined Jo accept the a. lie said that be would, leave" them an j how, and, walking out he left them on the sitting room table. She denied ever having accompanied him to anj hotel in this city, and said taat sno never saw mm again while m the city alter calling a her house." . The Republican aid: uThe storv goes that Giro was ternb.y in love with Mr. Christiaacy and wished to marry her in case sae was ucccssiurin getting; a divorce, but sho declined the prema lure proposal. This riled the foreigner's blood and he sought revenge. It is thought that revenge was his motive-for tcaiitvinir in the manner that ne did. The case is now boiling pretty lively, and the counsel for tho lady promise that there will be some developments belong that will be more surprising .than any yet turacd up to tho public gaze. The Washington Star states that 'Mr. J. N. Oliver, co-insel for Mrs. Chnatian vy, sas he has examined the depositions taken in the case of Giro against Blood, in a case of alleged false imprisonment. aad that "they show that Giro admits that he was confined in the Movamensing prison, at Fhilaielphia, for grand larce- ny, bat ne declined 10 ten wno naa mm arrested, because there was a lady con nected with iL lie also admitUd that he had been twice arrested in New York for disorderly conduct, aid he is now un- der bail for an attempt to suDora a wit ness to swear falsely in his civil suits with Dr. Blood." The Star further says: It would seem that although Mr. Christiancy's side had affidavits going to sspport iGiro's testimony, there is yet considerable doabt as to , whether they have oral testimony to corroborate him. Notwithstanding the New York testi mony, Mr. Holtchun, the clerk at the St James (who recently before the com missioner here, testified that Mrs.Chri tiancy was not the woman he saw on Christmas day last;) states : "I am just as positive still that the lady who was produced before me in the presence of the commissioner was not the one I saw oa Christmas day." The waiter at the hotel, who gave similar testimony, failed also to idsntify her, and the hackmaa (Bland) has made am affidavit declaring the woman he saw was tall, with dark hair and eyes, while Mrs. Christiancy is snail, with light .hair .and blue eyes. The case is kot over yet, oy any means, and some .sensational developments are nHmiinn Trip. Bill" ill ;iira. jiii cv." WaJHiyQToy. January A.
