put in jail to-day Smith Ennett and
Minerva Ennett, colored, for h rboring
escaped convicts. Tbo Ennetts lived,

time harboring the escaped convicts who
arc known to be lurking about the city.

Mike Huen' Oand In Triiubtr.
The redoubtable "Mi kje Peden Gang'
is in trouble again, this . time charged
with larceny. Measrs P, Bridget &
Co. have a lot of empty ' flasks stored in
their stables on Second street ami Mike
and his gang concluded to speculate on
them. Three weeks ago they commen
ced operations and have succeeded in
getting away quite a number of the bot
tles. Mike Feden, Jim Dnrant and Bob
Turner have been arrested and officers
are oa the lookout for the other three
members of the gang. The "gang,"
though of boys of about 13 years of age
and their leader a cripple,is to be dreaded,
inasmuch as they sleep under houses and
often bnild ires to warm by, strike
matches and smoke cigar stumps. They
are sharp rascals and we hope now that
as there is some positive proof ot their
guilt they will be sent to the House of
Correction. r

Sixteen Tears Ace.
Sixteeajyears ago to-day the Federal
troops marched into Wilmington. The
Confederate forces evacuated the city, the
evening before. At about 7 o'clock in
the morning of this day sixteen years
ago, the- Federal cavalry halted at the
corner of Second and Princess streets, in
front of the old jail building, which had
been used by the Confederates as a pris
on. When the cavalry drew no in xront

cere were at the residence of a gentleman
not more than fifty yards distant taking
breakfast. A son of the gentleman ran
ia and notified the officers that "the
Yankees were out there." The clatter
of teeth, banging of sword scabbords,
hasty gulping down of food and uncere
monious retreat of the officers over back
fences was bat fan to the "young sen"
who, to add to the discomforture t the
retreaters,- kept yelling "the Yankees are
coming." The officers made Little Bridge
and retired under its friendly shade until
the Yankees got over whea they took to
the woods and reached their command at
North East.

sembled at the City Hall last night to
witness the calisthenic exercises by the
pupils of Misses Burr and James' school
and to listen to the instrumental music
by Mrs. Cushing's pupils. Order and
discipline are chief requisites to the sue"
cess of anything that one seeks to ac
complish and particularly i3 it true where
a child's education is concerned. That

thenic exerceses, which are recommended
for their healthf ulness and as an auxil -iary
to the development of the human
frame, were executed with a nicety which
it is hard to describe. The movements
were slow, graceful and beautiful. The
fignres were new and exceedingly pretty.
. .The "Fan Drill" and the "Charge of
the Light Brigade," the latter being
repeated while' being executed, were ex
ceedingly pretty and spoke volumes lor
he discipline and careful training of the
pupils in the school.
