The following extract from a letter writtei bj a gentleman in New York to a gtntleoaa living here, alludes to a gi gantic scheme shortly to be set on foot by capitalists in this city and we respect; fully refer it to the scientific considera- tioa of all who may be interested in each matters. "By the way, this letter is partly on business. I under stand there is a gigantic speculation on foot among Wilmington capitalists. I want you to look into the matter and, it it appears well, get me sone stock. As I understand it, the scheme is to quietly without exciting suspicion, buy up all the land ia the neighberhood of the North Pole. When this is well in hand and there is no chance for outsiders to secure any vacant lots these money kings propose to Uy a wire from San Francisco to Japan, thus form ing a complete telegraphic line around the earth roughly near the equator. When you remember that the electric currents of the earth at present run from pole to pole, or ioBgitudiaally, the effect of this defiance of nature's laws will at once be obvious 0 a scientist like your self. If the needle will not go to tho pole, the pole must go to the needle. A tremendous cataclasm will be pro duced, the earth being switched around a quarter of the circle, and one of (Kp temperate rones will don our ulsters and start our cigars by the northern lights while the frisky Esquimaux will cultivate he use of fans and neglect his trousers. The country of icebergs will become the and of milk and honey, emigration in that direction will begin; property in Grinnell's land will advance to fabulous prices and tho fruits of ?agucitj, enter prise and capital will be reaped. A good thing may be made out of packing away arge icebergs before they melt. The great difficulty will be that the tre mendous freshets which most ensue may destroy property aud lives by creating landslides. You might look over the diagrams, however, and take fifteen or twenty lots for mt. I want corner lots at some poiat whtre yoa think there will be a good harbor. I do not care to in vest in property at aoy place where there is not twenty feet of water on the bar." We advise our friends to call at Jacobi's for Household Hardware of very dsecrip- ( ftun. A meeting of the Produce Exchange was held this morning to take some at" tion in regard to the bill now pending be fore the Legislature advocating the sale of the State's in rest in the Cape Fear k Yadkin Valle R. R. The meeting w . called to order by the President, Mr. R. E. Calder, and Capt. N. F. Thompson was requested to act as Secretary. . Gen. Imboden's letters to Gov. Jarvis and the News and Observer were read by the President. Hon. A. H. YanBokkelen spoke warmly in favor of the passage of the bill and thought that the Company which is a Tery large one, represented by Gen. Imbeden would fulfill their con tract. He thought that their proposi tioa was a very binding one oa them and is but an index of their good faith in the matter. Dr. A. J. DeRosset thought the prop osition one of great imoortance to this city and advocated the sale of tho road to Gen. Imboden. Capt. D. B: Murchisoa opposed the sale and thought that it would be to the interest of the state to allow the matter to stand as it is. He thinks that the on ly chance of eventually getting the road to this city wag in leaving it in the hands of its present owners. He says that he feels convinced that the par ties who wish the State to give them the option of buying the road are irresponsible and that their bject in getting the option is specula tive. Dr. DeRosset moved that a commit tee, consisting of Hon. A. H. YanBok kelen and Messrs R. E. Calder and B. G. Worth, be requested to go to Raleigh and advocate the passage of the bill.with proper restrictions, and to see that there could be no tranfer of the stock if the bill should be passed. Amended by Mr. Wm. Calder that the committee be sent uninstructed and to represent the interest of this city in the matter. Carried. The sense of the committee is that with the light now before them it would be tc the interest of the State and of this city for the State to sell its stock to Gen. Imboden for the company which he represents. If alter they arrive in Kal eigh should see any cause to change their vie ws they coald do so. The gentlemen composing the commit tee will leave to-morrow morning.
