The festival given by the ladies of St. Thomas' Church for the benefit ot the Sisters of Mercy, came to a close last evening. We are glad to know that the ladies were well patronized and sustain ed in their laudable object. The articles which were to be disposed of by rafiling were thrown for list evening and the lucky winners were notified of their sue cess. Little Miss Mary Hinsdale Mat thews, of Fayettevilie, won "Mary and her little Lamb" which was on exhibition at Capt. The operatic performance given last night at the Opera House complimen tary to Mrs. Jno. W. Cameron, was by far the best amateur performance we have ever seen onjthe Boards. The stage was admirably set and the costumes were elegant and appropriate. The characters were as finely conceived a3 they were appropriately dressed by the ladies and gentlemen assuming them. Mrs. McFarland, Mrs. Cameron and Mrs. Jno. . Lippitt took the piinciple female parts, and Messrs. Clark, Welfcli, Dyer and Bradley were the leading male characters. The efforts of the ladies and gentlemen must have surpassed I the most sanguine expectations of their friends and should be a source of great gratification to them. The choruses j were fine and were well received. Sul-1 livans Comic Opera, Cox and Box, was pleasingly rendered, by Messrs Chase, Bradley and Welsh. Mr. Chase's imita- tion of a banjo was very fine and exceed ingly amusibg. The very large audience which greeted the performers last even ing were delighted and many expressed a desire' for a repetition. One of the nrinciDal features of the A. M. evening's entertainment was the per for mance of Mrs. M. P.Taylor on the piano. I Thisladvwhois a musician of the high, est order of merit even surpassed herself in the execution of the difficult music of the two operas. Three for Luck. Dr. Deenwto-night. The subjects which the distinguished lecturer will discourse upon to-night are those upon which there is ample field for thought and we know of no one who is more apt to bestoWthe proper thought upon these two subjects or who probably has given more thought to them, thanthe eloquent divine who I under the auspices of tho Library As- sociation will address the -audience at the Opera Honse this evening. Lemons as a System BenOrator The way to get the better of a biliovs system without blue pill or quinine is to take the juice of one, two or three or more lemons, as the appetite craves, in as mach ice-water as makes it pleasant to drink without sugar, before going to bad. In the morning on rising or at least half an hour before breakfast, take the juice of one lemon in a goblet of water. This will clear the system of hu mors and bile, with mild efficacy, with- 0Jly aa7 01 ine weakening enects or caio- m.v 9 nr a m m mel or Congress water. People should not irritate the stomach by eating lem ons clear ; the powerful acid of the juice, which is almost corrosive, infallibly pro duces inflammation after a while, but properly diluted, so that it does not draw or burn the throat, it does its full medi cal work without harm, and when the stomach is clear of food, has abundant opportunity to work on the system thor oughly.
