JOSH. T. JAMES Editor k Prop'r. WILMINGTON, N. C. TUESDAY, MAY 10, 1881. Entered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, C, aa Second-Class Matter. N. GENKUAL. LKIS'3 OPIWIOn OF N C. b'OLD ICRS. In conversation with General J as. H. Lane, a few days ago and While discuss ing the merits of the Reams'station b it tle, he referred to the i jrreat comjili merit paid the three North Carolina brigades there engaged by General Lee; but mei tioned incidentally that he himself was not at that time in command, of his . brigide, ' This we -knew was the case be- for , from the fact "that 'the i gallant Gen eral was then off 'duty, recorering from the effects of a wound received in a pre viobj tattled la r 'this connection we will remind oar readers that some time - since we referred to the fact that Gen eral Mahone endeavored to appropriate - some of the laurels won by MacRaes " briiradc on the occtisioa of this Beams' r .... , ; station battle by claiming the capture oi a few pieces of artillery which Macilae's - men had already driven the enemy from, and in their eagerness to preS3 forward - and follow ' up their advantage had left behind ungaurded, when Mahone's men came up, and without Bring a run. . atteuloted to claim the r O fruits of MacRue's gallantry. In the same way in which we gleaned by the extracts published yesterday from Lane's report of tha battle of bputtslyvaniu Coort House, this valiant hero sought to claim the honor of capturius lour hundred prisoners, which Lane had al- rpnriir disarmed and sent- to the rear while he continued to move iarward sti'i inrther to the front. Our readers, or at lpnafc some of them, will uo at be aule to see," probably for the" first tyna, General Iee's opinion of North" Carolina soldiers, and particularly of three North CaroHua brigades, M ac Rae'a. Laue'd an! Cook ' although the letter from General Lee to Governor Vance was at one time pub lished in the Daily Journal of this city during the war. The same sentiments ftxnressed bv General Lee in his letter 1----- V - to the Governor of North Carolina was afterwards repeated by him in conversation with General Lane at Army Headquarters. r At our lequest, General Lane has kindly reduced to writing the incident bearing upon the matter, which wo give below, together with the letter of General Lee, which we stated yesterday we should publish to-day. In addition, we .also print some extracts from President Da vis' speech at Charlotte in 18G4, which may prove of interest at this time. When General Lee and President Davis speak in such glowing terms, North Carolinians can woll afford to smile at the sneers of little men like Walter H. Taylor, who to cover up the misbehavior of some of his owa "Mag nificent Virginians," attempts to throw the responsibility and odium upon North Carolina soldiers, whom we think bora the brunt of the whole war in Virginia. It will' be observed that General Lee nowhere mentions Mahone's brigade at all. General Lane s iys: When I returned to the Army, early in September, 1864, I had to report to Gen. Lee in person, as he had in person, - ou the Held, put Gea. Cowan in command :ot my brigade during my absence. In our conversation on this occasion, he - spoke in the roost complimentary terms of the attack by Cook's, MacBae's and Lane's Brigades upon Hancock's forti fied position at Beams' Station, and de clared that these brigades, by their gal lantry there, "had not only put North ' Carolina, but the wholeConfederacy, under a debt of gratitude which could never be I i TV :r. 3 I re paia. - a e aiso in iormga .rog:, .mat in addition to His official report, he had written & special letter tcf- 36t. Vance acknowledging the great service render ed by these brigades on that occasion: The folio wiag appeared in the TF7 - mington Jo urndl in 1864: Tribute to North Carolina Letter from Gen. Lee . We have been permitted to make the fallowing extract of a letter from Gen. Lee to Got. Vance, complimenting the North" Carolina" troopsTor ,their glorious victory achieved .at Beams' Station. This tribute from the great hero of this revolution is the highest honor that could be paid to North Carolina. Let every soldier treasure it up as a memento - of mestimaDie vaiue : - TJd. Qrh. Army Northern Virginia, AUgUSl ZV, 80. IIi$,ExceUency Z. B. Vance, Governor of Norm uaroung: I have been frequently called upon to mention the services of North Carolina soldiers in this army, but their gallant ry and conduct were never more deserv in ' the admiration than in the engage ment at- Beams' - Station on the 25th 1Drh hri trades of Generals Cook, Mac- Be ai;d Lane, the last tinder the tem- porary command or Uen. ? uonner, aa vanced throngh a thick abattis of felled trees under -a heavy firs of musketry and artillery and carried , the enemy 'S works with a steady courage that elicit ed the warm commendation of their corps and division commanders and the admiration of the array. On the same occasion the brigade i Gen. Barringer bore a conspicuous part in the operations of the cavalry, which were no less distinguished for boldness and efficiency than those ot the infantry. If the men who remain in North Caro lina share the spirit of those they , have sent to the field, as I doubt not they do, her defence may be Eecurely intrusted to their bands. I am, with pie.it respect, Your obdt. eervt, It. E. Lee, General. President Dasis, in a speech in Char lotte, in 1864, in ppeaking of North Car olina said: , NorthCaro'ina was sometimes derisive ly called the old Bip Van Winkle State, but he could gay it was behind none in performing htr duty in the pres?nt struggle for independence; she may be slow to engage in a quarrel, but she would be the last to surrender or abandon the fight; her sons were fore most in the first battle of the war. Great Bethel, aud they were foremost in the last fight, near Peteisbnrg, Beams' Station. The good old State had faith fully sustained the Conscript law and was behind none in affording men and means to sustain the war; he thanked the people for what they had done and beg ged them to stand firm as they were do ing, and the day of peace and icdepen dene e would surely dawn upon us.
