IlunawayL Yesterday afternoon a horse attached to a cart; loaded with groceries took fright on Second, near Market street, and dashed frantically down Second to Orange street, where tbo cart-was upset throwing out its entire load, consisting of a barrel of molasses, two or three 25 pound boxes of candy, meal, meat, etc The candy boxe3 were broken open in the fall and their contents quickly de molished by a crowd of small boys. The horse, cart, etc., were the property of Mr. Geo. Hewlett, of Masonboro Sound. Launnburg. This thriving little town is improving probably faster than any place of its size in the State. There arc now from twen ty to thirty neat and cozy frame dwell ings in course of erection and others are to be built. Capt. H. Behraps, of Wadesboro, is the contractor and archi tect under whose supervision the dwell ings are being erected. Preparations are nowbeing made for the erection of a row of handsome brick stores on Front street. In sauntering about thj town a few days ago we noticed a couple of very handaome new stores, the property of oar former townsman, Mr. J4 I. McCallam, and the handsome new dwelling of, Mr. Henry Forthrop. In the Railroad shops notics ft great nsay ferilw faces, i WILMINGTON, N. Medico-Legal Report- We understand that the medico-legal report made by Dr. Eugene .Grissom, of Raleigh, in the DeJarnette trial, will be published in the next issue, the June number, of the North Carolina Medical Journal. We shall look for this paper with much interest, confident that in the eyes of those who are able to judge of the subject it will maintain Dr. Grissom in his view3 as regards DeJarnette's sanity. The Purcell. We are glad to learn that Mr. B . L. rerry, the enterprising proprietor of the Purcell House, who a few months ago took charge of the property tempo rarily, has succeeded so well that he has purchased the business, and has become the permanent proprietor He contem plates making a number of improvements and will soon have a general overhaul ing. In all its history the reputation of the Purcell House with the traveling public was never better than it is now. Released. a ne iraiy rarai maividaal who was doiiig the town yesterday, came up be fore Mayor Smith this morning in a very penitent mood. His Honor, in consider ation of the fact that tha penitent had been incarcerated ever since yesterday noon, and had done no wrong- to any one especially, except possibly himself, re leased him with a kindly admonition, for which country seemed exceedingly grate ful and departed fall of promises for the better in the future. A moated Body does not always belong to an inebriate. Kidney troubles will cause bloat, but Warner's Safe Kidaey and Liver Cure has never failed to remove it. Fine Dogs. The sportsmen and hunters in this city are holding an ovation over a pair of very handsome setter puppies which were presented to Mr. T. H. Johnson', the pa triarch of the Fox Club of this city, by Mr. Wm. Newdeil, a member of one of the largest gun clubs in Pennsylvania. ine doss nave a pedigree as long as a flag pole and were sent to Mr. Johnson in return for some little kindness shown Mr. Newdeil when the latter gentleman passed through this city en route to Florida. The pups, which are said to be of the finest stock in the country, could not possibly have fallen into better hands than those of the "patriarch." Come to Grief-. James P. Spann, the colored individ ual of African, descent, who was sharp enough to catch Simon Gregg, an es caped convict from the South Carolina penitentiary, a few days ago, was caugh1 himself with a warrant to day for a little sharp practice in the matter of making, or pretending to make, or repair, a pair of boots, for which he had obtained ad vances from the party who had contract ed with him for the boots, with the un derstanding that the boots were at a cer tain shoemaker's shop where Spann was But it turned out, it seems, that defendant was neither working at the aforesaid shop, nor were the boots to be found in that shop, consequently he was arrested for obtaining money under false pretences, tried and convicted be fore J. C. Ilill, J. P., and committed in default of surety to the amount of 100 for his appearance at the next term of the Criminal Court The commitment at the Sheriff's office from the J. P's. office charged the defendant Spann with being "a cheat ani a fraud." Some there are of Spanns own persuasion who rejoice that he has come to grief so soon after his exploit with the South Carolina convict They think it a just punish ment visited upon him for taking "dat po nigger back tode pentenshary."
