The docket of the Criminal Court for the special term commencing the 30 th instant is very light indeed and will probably not occupy the time of the Court more than three or four days dur ing the coming week. I here is one cap ital case, however, on docket which has been there for the past year, and is like ly to remain there for an indefinite pe riod, or until the defendant, George Myers, colored, indicted for burglary, wh3 escaped from the jail in thi3 county some twelve months or more ; ago, is re captured and brought to trial. By the way, we would like to ask what effort has been made to eccarc tho capture of luQ escaped culprit? His escape,it will b remembered, was a very marvellous one He was manacled to another prisoner in the same cell and succeeded in freeing himself from the fetters that held him to the floor of the dungeon, without any 003, even nis companion iu cuams, being aware of his escape at the time; and then, strange to say, he made his exit through a hole made Ly removing the bricks from the outer wall of the building, and even the noise of this move ment, as the story goes, failed to arouse any one about the building or the pre mises to the danger of a prisoner escap. ing. But why should efforts to catch the escaped jail bird cease? Editor Review Dear Sir: Is the plat of ground recently covered by tho old Market (which proved to be an eye sore to many) to be converted into a fish market? and the beautiful park, foun tains, statuary, seats for visitors, music and its accompaniments, to be but the fabric of a dream? I simply ask the question of the new Mayor and those who aid him in beautifying the city and there by rendering it attractive. A looker-on and sabscriber, -: rr ' THURSDAY, MAY Prohibition at Long Creek. Notwithstanding the busy time with the farmers just now we understand that the prohibition meeting held at Long Creek yesterday was largely attended. The speaking, it is said, was very good, the dinner a prime one and the dancing in the evening, to the young folks, was "awfully delicious." We are indebted to Mr. Jas. H. Moore, the Secretary of the meeting, for the following report of the day's proceedings: Long Crekk, Pender County, ' May 25th, 1881. EditorTReview: The causo of Prohibition gained much strength here to-day. It was ' the occa sion of a public meeting of the Pender Prohibition Association, in the form of a picnic. The crowd was large. Tho meeting was a success in point of num bers and in influence produced for prohi bition. The President, Dr. Satchwell, in a hearty greeting and warm welcome to all, said he was glad of this opportunity of agaia taking the bold and unselfish stand which he had taken tor prohibi tion last fall at its earliest agitation in this State. It might be . defeated in Pender and in the State, but oa this and all public questions, the' ruling motion with him w s the enquiry: Is it .right, and just and is it best for North Caro lina? After a warm prayer, by Rev. J. S. Black, J udge Cantwell was handsomely introduced by the President. Lie held the large and appreciative audience spell bound for over an .hour, in a telling and effective advocacy of the causa of prohibition. He set forth in a lucid and eloquent manner the principles and ob jects ef the movement, flis speech pro duced a strong and happy effect. - The crowd then adjourned, upon invi tation, to the long table loaded with the best eatables which the ladies of Pender, combined with some of Wilmington's fair daughters, (who had come with their approving smiles) had prepared, in the shape of a dinner. After this rich and bountiful repast, 'the social enjoy ments of the day were continued by an alegant ball in the lower hall of "the Masonic building. This is going on while I write, and promises to be in every way enjoyable. A fine band of music from, your city enlivens the exercises of the day and adds to its pleasures. Jrreliminarv stens were tauen lor a Grand Prohibition Fourth of July cele bration at Burgaw, on the approaching .National Anniversary. The Committee of Arrangement aonsists of Messrs. R. P. Paddison, G. F. Walker, Bruce Wil liams, S. S. Satchwell. William Hand and W; T. Ennett. The committee were requested to invite Governor Jarvis, Judge Cantwell, Judge Merrimon and others to attend and deliver addresses. A resolution was adopted asking the County Commissioners 'of Pender to de cline to grant license to sell intoxicating drinks. The ladies of Pender, who are here in large numbers, are strong for prohibi tion. James F. Moore, Secretary of the meeting. Another Rumor. 1 he f armer ec Mechanic tells us that, "improbable as it would appear, there is great probability that the R. & D. R. R. will obtain a controlling inter est in the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad ere another fortnight I Go it, Richmond ! Good-bye, Norfolk I" We know nothing of such a proba bility and think it more than likely that the Farmer 5' Mechanic is misinformed. Two months ago there were reports car rent here that the R. & D. R. R. were about to become the controllers of the Carolina Central. We forbore to pub lish this at the time, for one reason, we didn't believe it, and the facts justi fied our forbearance. Tk u yv-vij. no moie truth in this there was in the other. last report than A New Yacht. A very handsome new yacht arrived in this city on the last New York steam er and is owned by two of our modest young men who will use her only (?) as a pleasure boat to take the place of the yacht Little Sister, which has done good service for many years past. The Glide, for that is the name of the new yacht, is a perfect beauty and is possi bly the best fitted up craft in the fleet of the Carolina Yacht Club. It is thought now that if the small yachts of the Club are entered for the Foarth of July race the Glide, of Wrightsville, will be put in. An old boatman says she is evidently a very swift, smart boat. Nor. barque Forstte cleared to-day for Rotterdam with 3,300 barrels rosin, shipped by Messrs. Williams & Murchi son. .
