is THE DAILY 1EUIEIV. JOS fr. T. JAMES, Editor & Prop'r. WILMINGTON, N. C. TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 1381 Ettcred at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N. C, as Second Clat Matter. Mr. I'. Lorillard has matched his colt Sachem, by War Dance, dam Sly Boots, against Messrs Dwyer Brothers' colt Onondaga, by Leamington, dam Susan Beane, three quarters of a mile, for $5,000 a side. The race will com? off at Jerome Park on Saturday, 25th iusU , . .- m e - mm The Loudon Economist estimates the average immigrant, in capital or capital producing force, at $1,000, an estimate which agrees with the opinions of polit ical economists generally. Looked at in thi3 light, the United States is being en riched at present to the amount of 4, 000,000 or $5,000,000 daily. m m m m m Florida, having established a large and growing market for her oranges, is now beginning to ship peaches to the New York market. A consignment arrived - recently, packed in compartment boxe8 like the patent egg boxes, and each peach wrapped in cotton. They were ap parently as fresh as when picked from the tree, and sold readily ut two dollars a dozen. e sa - e 1 . . Daring the first five months of this year 182,108 immigrants were landed at Castle Garden. The corresponding per iod of last year was remarkable for the activity of immigration, but the arrivals of 1881 exceeded those tor .1880 by 46, 772. They have steadily increased month by month, and in May alone they were much more than half the totvl number for the first five months of last year. A foreign correspondent writes to a German raner that the order toclosethe - AS saloons of St. Peteraburir on the morn ing and evening of the day on which the live Nihilists were executed was a clever forgery of the signature of Lcris Mcli knlF. minister of the interior. lUwas a - w j concoction of the Nihilists" to have the same tokens of mourninsr observed on that occasion as were observed after the death of the late Czar. The Washington Star does not ,mean to leave any room for a new Administra tion organ there, and says: "It will be well for all parties interested to know and to realize that President Garfield is en dowed with the rare genius of rulership. He evades no responsibility and is con trolled by no subordinates. His rela tions with every member of his Cabinet are most cordial, but the head of the table is where MacGregor sits." The New York Sun prolesses to have received intelligence from Washington City to the effect that Mr. Blaine, Sec retary of State, is "not only seriously but alarmingly ill." The Sun does not indi cate the exact nature of the disease but we infer that it must 4araTy sis. tells us that: Mr. Blaine's most intimate friends, personal as well as political, have seldom been able to see him, even when they have called at his residence, of late. 'The commissions of officers whose appoint ment Mr. Blaine most earnestly desired, thougli made out by the clerks, remain unsigned by the Secretary of State,. JVhis tlistrict is without a Judge, simply on accouut of a lack of muscular strength in Mr. Blaine's right hand to sign his commission. Gen. Grant has arrived in Chicago from Mexico and will leave that city for New York to-morrow. He discusses on the great political question of the day in New.York, the Conkling farce, and ex presses his firm and unalterable and un dying belief in the hero of Sprague's lit tle shot gun. He will leave Chicago for New York to-morrow and when once, he gets there and has fairly flung hisvmouth into the mess we predict that the' dead lock will be broken, either by the rout of nil of Conkling's forces or else by an ad journment. It is difficult to understand how Grant can help Conkling in this con test, especially when it is remembered that New York State never did tak much stock in Grant as a politician. . The suit against the Catholic.Church property of the Cincinnati Diocese, brought by the assignee of Archbishop Purcell, was called in the Common Pleas finnrt at Cincinnati, last week. The suit is against all property which is held in trust by the Archbishop, and includes churches, schoolhouses, hospitals, ceme teries, and such city ard other property as has been given by benevolent persons for the use of the Church, and has been held jn trust by the Archbishop. .The creditors represented by the assignee number about 5,000, and their claims aggregate 4,000,000. The suits will, by agreement, go at once to a higher court. The chief point at issue one which it said has never beea decided in the courts is whether tno property held in trust by a bishop of the church is liable for bis debts. , , - v mong the rumors floating around to day, says a Washington local, is one to the effect that a statement from ex-Governor Shepherd will soon be given to the public containing a fall account of the 5,000 fee paid to General Garfield in the matter of the I)e Golyer pavement contract Of course General Shepherd knows all about this matter, bat although he is such a close friend of General Giant and Senator Conkliog, it is doubtful whethor he would consider it just the thing for him to tell all he knows about it. . Rumors are thick as to developments which are impending, and which will put ex-Secretary Sherman in an awkward position on account of transactions daring his adminstration of the Treasury De partment. These rumors have been brought to Mr. Sherman's attention, and he says they are beneath his notice. Here In ihe Test. The Chicago Inter Octan says that there is dirt enough in State street, in that city, to mike a State as big as Rhode Island. Why don't they have a man take a wheelbarrow and carry .it away. Boston Post. "Don't weep, my friend," said the pas? tor to the sorrowing widower, as he stood beside his ..wife's coffin. ''Don't weep; she has'gone to heaven." 'Yes, I know she has gone there;" sobbed the afflicted mon, "and that is what makes it so hard to bear. I know I'll never see her again." i Be Sensible.
