Captain Manning entertained as many os torty at his noise, tweniy-eigni oi M A 1 A " whom took boats for the banks and en joyed a sail to and from the ceanside by moonlight. There was a large and happy crowd gathered together on the Passport this morning as .she steamed down the river, the occasion being the excursion given by the Rechabites. We trust that they all have had a good time and that the order will realize handsomely in their venture. Returned. Captain Thomas C. Lewis has just returned from his' Summer vacation, which he spent at his old home in New port, Rhode Island? whither he has been for the past month. Newport, as we know, is a great watering place, where wealth and fashion are to be seen in great abundance'at this season of the year. But in answer to, our inquiries as to whether .he enjoyed many plunges into the surf, CapL Lewis coolly informed us that it was too cold up to within a day or twoofhis departure to enjoy such sport; that on the night of the Fourth he wore his overcoat to keep comfortable and he didn't have any chill either. We are glad to see our friend looking bale and hearty, and much improved bj this little relaxation from business. Mr. Wm. E.'Colles. Superintendent of the Washburn Iron Company, Worcester, Mass., remarks: All I can say in regard to St. Jaeobs 0,il is, that it is the best remedy I have ever seen. The maximum temperature to-day was 95 against 98 on the cor responding date last year. From Point Caswell. The steamer John Dawson arrived here yesterday afternoon, just as we put our paper to press, with IS excursion ists on board from Point Caswell and the neighboring country. Some of these went immediately to the Sound in vari ous conveyances, Capt. Southerland hav ing sent his four-horse wagonette to the dock for' their accommodation, while others remained here overnight and went down the river this morning on the Pass port, They are to return to Point Cas well to morrow on the Dawsen and we trust that they will all have derived much pleasure from their visit to the city and the seashore. Condition of the Kiier. The water in the river continues frightfully low; fifteen inches is the best depth that can be found at Windham's Cut, on the shoals. The North State arrived here from Elizabethtown this morning and after discharging and tak ing on a cargo cleared for Kelley's Cove this afternoon where she will be met by the A. P. Hurt, when the two boats will exchange their freights, and one return to Fayetteville, if she can pull through, and the other return to this city. We, of this section, should esteem our selves fortunate. While in the interior. in Raleigh and Charlotte, for instance the temperature is so fearfully warm as to be oppressive and the earth is parch ed and dry and dying from the want of rain, here we have strong, refreshing, life-giving breezes, night and day. The seasons have been excellent and the earth is teeming with fruit. At Raleigh, the News and Observer tells us that the earth is parched and dry and the vegetables in the gardens unfit to look at and the Charlotte Observer says that in its section the fruit trees haye been actually dying from the want of water. We record to-day the death of one of the oldest and one of the most truly estimable of our citizens, that of Gen. Jo seph S. Murphy. He died at his resi dence in this city this morning in the 80th year of his age. Gen. Murphy was a native of Fayette ville but removed to Wilmington when a boy and has remained here continuous ly ever since. He was a gentleman of a remarkably retiring disposition and of a strict probity and integrity of character which had never once been assailed dur ing the three-quarters of a century of his life passed here. God. rest him ! There are too few of his- stamp left among us now. Midsummer Thanksgiving. We second the motion. Let's have another day of rest, when President Gar field's recovery, is assured, a day devoted to thanksgiving and prayer and fishing. The Governor of Ohio has made a remark to this effect to the Governors of other States and the Governors of other States have responded very cordially. There will be lots of thanksgiving anyhow, and a very hearty giving of thanks it will be, too should the President recover, but there will be no special closing of banks and business and time for frolicking as well as thanksgiving, unless a day is specially voted for that purpose. And therefore, we say, let's have the thanks giving. Call at Jacobi's for Garden Hoes and Rakes, Shovels, Spades, Axes, &c. There yon have the lowest prices. t THE MAILS.
