The result of the investigation before Judge Meares yesterday at Chambers, in the matter of argument by counsel for a writ of habeas corpus in the case of J ohn McKoy, colored, resulted in the petition being granted and the defendant ad mitted to bail by His Honor in the sum of $600, the bond to be approved by the Judge. Church, South, left the city this morning on the northern bound train for his home in Raleigh, and from thence will go to New York, whence he sails by ocean steamer, on the 6th of August, for Earope, to attend the gathering of delegates of the M. E. Church, from all parts 6 f the globe, in one Ecumenical Council, to be held in the city of London, commencing on or about the 1st day of September. Dr. Burkhead has been preceded by Col. Walter Clark, of Raleigh, a lay delegate, who sailed from New York some three or four weeks ago, and who . we understand will make a short tour of the Continent before the Council convenes and deliver a series of lectures. , The North Carolina Conference sends but two delegates those mentioned above butthey have sent two able re prese ntative. The Salisbury Watchman has been inter viewing Capt. We Cain, late on the Im boden survey, but now employed on the Midland route, and he says that Gen. Imboden is very much in favor of extend ing the Tinsalia road from Lenoir via Taylors ville, Salisbury aad Wadesboro to Wilmington, and that, very probably, a surrey of that rente will soon be begun. R. The resignation is to take effect on the first of August but his successor has not yet been announced. We are sorry that we are to lose Mr. Emerson. He is an exceedingly clever gentleman, a good citizen and an excellent officer and s, besides, a Wilmingtonian "by mar riage."
