C. as Second -Class Matter. Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Tennyson are said to have disputed over the size of their heads, and had them measured. Mr. Tennyson's proved to be the wider, the other the higher. The prophetic Vennor i3 fortj. His father was a hardware merchant, with a h ase in Liverpool and another in Mon ti eal. The prophet was educated at the McGill University of Montrea . The continued and renewed improve m2i.t in the condition of the President i a matter of profound gratification. It ii jonfidenlly believed now that he will recover, and that the recovery will be complete, not leaviug the distinguished pajfeot, a3 was at first feared, an invalid for life. Prejudice Kills. "Eleven years our daughter suffered on a bed of misery under the care of sev eral of the best (and some of the worst) I physicinns, who gave her disease various names but no relief, and nowsne is restored-to us in good health by as simple a remedy as Hop Bitters, that we had poohed at for two years, before using it. We earnestly hope and pray that no one else will let their sick suffer as we did, on account of prejudice against po good a medicine as Hop Bitters." The Par ents. Telegram. The city of Baltimore is in an enviable position. It is well governed. A new proof of this is given in the construction of the Gunpowder Water Works. Sev eral year3 ao the people voted $4,000- 000 to construct the works. A magnifi cent tunnel, seven miles long, a great part of it through solid cock, was cut; and now the works are completed, and there remains $37,000 of the appropriat eu $1,000,000 unexpended. This circum stance, however, ha3 its paralled in the history of the City Hall, of the fame city, for which $2,000,000 were appropriated. After it was entirely completed the build iogcommission had over $100 000 unex pended in juey on their hands. m m m m The Bulletin of Monday Viys : Activ ity in new building enterprises continue8 a noticeable feature of the city real es tatetmarket, and the amount of capital that is put into them is,in the aggregate very Urge. Costly private residences on the avenues and boulevards are. multi plying, jet not more rapidly than first class apartment houses, which reat now adays in many cases. much beyond the figures which the average brown stone front used to commmd when tims were not so flush. The activity in this liqe of bu3ines3, however, is not confined to New York ; it is not less noticeable in thexlare cities, and this, too, notwith- The Bulletin, noticing a complaint irom Louisiana that no white emigra tion, which is abundant in Texas, reaches there, says : There is no such nerro i WASHINGTON LETTER. Washington, D. C., July 29, 1S81. There 13 now little doubt of the ulti mate; recovery of the President. Still a few person, incluJiag sjme physicians, hold that the treatment h3 been bad. that the symptoms have been misunder stood, that the diily fever is' malarial and that the chance of recovery is very slight. So far as tuVnon-professional portion of the public is concerned the course of events since. Tuesday has seemed to be in the direction of recovery and the physicians in attendance so re gard it. There will evideutly be the liveliest kind of a tight among the doc tors, no matter what the result may be. Two deaths of interest to all, and caus ing more than ordinary regret among Washingtonians, have occurred this week. First was that of the pure man and eminent Judge, Nathan Clifford, of the Supreme Bench, whose home has been in this city for the last 23 years. The vacancy caused by this death will probably be filled by a Republican, but of course no immediate action will I e talen. The other respected citizen who has left us was Hon. John Cliurch, for two years past Secretary of the Senate. Air. Burch wag during much of his life engaged in editorial work, and acquired much influence in politics. He Was a most efficient officer of the Senate. His place will necessarily be tilled as soon as the Senate assembles, the mere question being whether this shall be done before or atter the New York Senators take their-Jseats. If before the Democrats willlect Mr. Burch's successor, if after the Republicans will do so, provided the erratic Mahone continues to act with them. Representative Carlisle, of Kentucky, than whom ao more influential man sits in the House of Representatives, has re turned from abroad where he has made a study of financial matters. He says our Government bonds will stay at home hereafter, and European investments in America will be in railroads and other securities. He is confident that ffovern ment bonds can be floated at three per cent, and Congress will at lta next Ses sion make a provision for such a bond. I he Secretary of the Ireasury has commenced a most searching investiga tion into the report- that infernal ma chines have lately been shipped to Eu rope irom this country The opinion here is, however, that the reports were wholly false, or that an ordinary and I o--u lur-'rtnt oi.j "uVmy creat ing so much excitement in England. 1 , , GUEDGE.
