There are no greater educators of the pub'ic mind and taste than handsome buildings and it always gives us pleasure to chronicle the erection of them. A day or two ago we were shown through St. Stephen's A. M. E. Church, ou the corner of Fifth and Bed Cross streets, presided over by the Rev. J. G. Frye, aud must confess to some surprise as to its immense dimensions and staunch aud substantial walls and timbers The church, which is of the pure ijothic style of architedure, is exactly liktSt John's Episcopal Church, butsgret.deal larger, ltib yua.r7 leetuud the inaiu auuitorium is 4iTtel 6 iuches high iu the clear. The main auditorium, or church proper, will be completed during the next six months and will hare a seating capacity a a of abftut 1,678. It is to be supplied with a gallery and the choir will be over the main entrance to the church, "he Woof,. is self supporting and the timbers about it are neatly arched. The church is to be supplied with new furniture and the pulpit will be fitted up with oiled walnut furniture. There are now 3i6r 030 bricks n the walls of the church and 16,000 more will be required to finish the steeple, which is to be 116 fft - t hich The steeple will be ap be sup " " O nrnnriatel v finished and will plied with a beautiful nnial. A large' and elegant bell, weighiog 1,200 pounds, arid costing $600, is soou to be erected in that portion of the stee ple in which it is to be placed. The windows of the church are to be er col ' a a ored or stained glass, and the large windows in the East and West ends of the building will be ecclesiastically arranged, the one in the feast having a large star in scroll work and colored Ilea Ol l LIC auuiiuuuia aic vj ""vj much attention has been paid by the architect, Daniel A. Sadgwar, to the proper, ventilation of the building. Large heaters will be used in the basement and by means of flues and registers the build ing will be heated. The Rev. J. G. There are now 800 communicants. :.
