The Hou. William E. Dodge and Mrs.
IliMige were most pleasantly entertained
during the Londou season. Mr. Dodge
made speeches at a Mansion Huase recep
tion and at Exeter Hall, and bccamG the
admirable occasion of countlets dinner
ud evening parties. Mr. and Mrs. Dodge
arc at present in Switzerland.
The theory that court life is enervat
ing geU no support from the
t.f Germany. Only ten days ago the
ilJ gentleman was reported to be quite
ill, and on Saturday evening he rode out
to inspection and kept his saddle for
three hours a feat which few healthy
farmers of his age would be equal to.
Mr. Ludlow, the prohibition candidate
for Govercor of Ohio, is a manufacturer
of cider mill.. Yet cider will become
'hrrd." and when in that condition has
been known to intoxicate. Mr. Ludlow
is in favor o I producing a beverage and
them prohibiting its use. He may argue
that cider has innocent uses.
On September 1st the office of pay
master-general of the navy became va
cant by the retirement of the inenmbent
under the law, and no appointment can
be made until the President can himself
order it. This is perhaps one of the very
peculiar and isolated cases in the ezecu
tive department of the government
where the President's inability to act
stands oat prominently.
Mrs Alexander Hamilton survived her
husband fifty-one years. Had her life
been prolonged three additional years
she would have reached a fall century
The inscription on the stone which marks
her grave ia a model of simplicity, and
reads thus: "Eliza, daughter of Philip
Schuyler, widow of Alexander Hamilton

November 6, 1854; interred here."

There-is a certain satisfaction in know
ing that Guiteau asks that iion shutters
be pat at the windows of his cell, and that
he dreads release from prison. That he
shornld shudder with the fear of lynching
and assassination is part of the legiti j
mate consequences of his cold-hearted
bloody deed. It is also a proof of the
healthful action of his mind that he de
sires the services of "an eminent criminal
lawyer." w . :

A yean ago the Netbs and Courier,
reviewing the events of the previous de

pendent of any.-expectation.: of.. rapid
growth consequent upon railroad ex ten

condition of the low country and of the

has prospered, nevertheless, and at no
time in the history of the port was the
future as rich in reasonable hope as it is
to day. -
The wholesale and retail trade of
Charleston daring-the year was satisfac
tory, while unmarked by feverish activi
ty. Charleston has entered the arena
and holds the ground against 'the rivals
who had been considered invincible.
In the staples, the business of th& last
year leaves no room for complaint. Cot
ton, 629,187 bales. Rice, 53,871 tierces.
Spirits of turpentine, 51,386 casks. Bos
in, "231,417 barrels. Crude phosphate,
103,183 tons. Lumber, 18,610.857 feet.
These are the receipts of the year,' the
increase in cotton and crude phosphate
being the most noteworthy!. The value
of the staples received at Charleston is
estimated at $36,216,000, and the whole
trade of the city amounts to no less than
$71,211,000. An analysis of the busi
ness projes it to e worth even more
than that amount ' expressed in money
would indicate.
