THE DAILY REUIE17. JOSH. T. JAMES, Editor & Prop'r WILMINGTON, N. C. . FRIDAY. DECEMBKIi 2, 1641. Entered at the Postofflce at Wilmington. N. C. as Second-Claea Hatter John Brodie and Shadrach Heater colored, who murdered 51 r. T. M. Lynek, a peaceful and inoffensiro eitieen of Ox ford, in tbia Stale, one night last week, waa taken from jail early yesterday morn Ld g and hanged by a mob of masked men. Brodie and Hester confessed the murder. The public debt was reduced $7,249, 126.25 daring the month of November. It this could be kept ap the entire debt can bo paid in the next twelve or fifteen years, as it should be. We aro not of tho3C who think that debts contracted by the fathers should bo consigned as' a legacy to their children. The directors of the suspended Me chanics' National Bank, at Newark, N J., propose to come to the relief of the stockholders by subscribing liberally to wards liquidating tne indebtedness ef de positors. One director has agreed to put in $200,000, c uother 100,000, an other $300,000, and others "as much as they can raise," if all will contribute amounts which shall be considered rea onably liberal. The greatest of the wheat producing States of the Union, counted by millions of bushels, are as follows: Jlliions, 51, 000,000;- Indiana, 47,000,000; Ohio, 45,000,000; Michigan, 36,000,000; Min nesota, 35,000.000; Iowa, 31,000,000; California. 30,000,000; Missouri, 25,600,- 000, Wisconsin, 25.O0J.000; Pchnsjlvan ia 19,000,000. The total crop of the Uni ted Sutes ia 459,000,000 bushels, grown on about 35,000.000 acres of land, mak ing an average of near thirteen bushels to the acre fi t his age. the illness which now en feebles Katser Wilhelm might well cause anxiety. It is a bad year, too, for rulers of great nations. It most have occurred to many observers that he was overdoing the octogenarian activity of which he has naturally been proud, in his protracted horseback feats daring the military manoeuvres, followed : np the other day by a stag hunt in which his share of the slaughter was enormous ven if arranged so as to be comparatively easy for him. The Russian government, according to the Noyoe Vremya, has sanctioned the formation ot the new Pushkin Club which is intended as a medium of "inter communication among men of' letters in Russia. The club also proposes to assist necessitous members; to insure the pub lication of works of merit by young writers and to organize at its own ex pense excursions to the interior of Bus. sia for the purpose of discovering and preserving specimens of the ancient pop nlar literature. A New York letter ef Monday says : Delers in Government bonds report that never before in their experience has money been so freely offered on these se parities at this season of the year as at the "present time. The figure to-day was 3 per cent., and the supply was in excess of the demand. The market for govern ments was very fair, and to borrow them was a difficult matter. A close calcula tion makes the amount in the United States treasury jutt now available for the purchase of bonds $50,000,000." mum The advocates of rapid transit ia Phii delphia are pushing their application for an elevated railroad charter before the council's committee en railaoads.' Let ters have been received from a number of prominent New York merchants on the line of the elevated railroads in that city, showing that the business lias : hot been damaged in any manner from the passenger trains. Official figures-are also quoted showing that the net receipts of the surface roads have' largely, in creased, instead of diminished, since the elevated roads were built. Goa. J. M. Leach pmblishes a short card in the Raleigh Observer in response to the report current in regard to his ru mored change of base. It is not as ex plicit as might be desired bat we pub lish what he sajs: The first intimation that has reached me in any way that I was to quit ray pro fession and turn editor was the announce ment in your paper of yesterday. Did you believe it? Whatever else may be fall me, I shall never assume the respon sible and onerous duties of that profes sion, honorable and useful as it is, as well as essential in the promulgation ef truth and the support and maintenance of public liberty. J.M. Liach. Thousands cf ladies have found sud den relief from all their woesby the use of Ljdia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com pound, the great ' remedy for diseases peculiar to females. Charles Macbeth, an old and in fluential citizen of Charleston, and fori number of terms Mayor of that city, died on Wednesday morning, aged 77 years, bavins; been born in Charleston in 1804 -He was Mayor of the city at the ctase of tbe war in 1865. The Ketc8 .and Co nrier gives ushis interesting blt-afi the history of the evacuation of Chsrles t on by the Con federates aa d : t ko en try of tho Federal forces: - ' ; Charleston bad been under fire-for more than two years when the Confeder ate forces quietly withdrew, and the fair February . morning dawned to find the city without other head or master than the dignified gentleman who is now at rest. This had been a camp. The rank grass grew in the streets. Hurtling shells had put an end to the conduct of business affairs. The sword was saprenra. But the end bad come. - Civil authority was restored, and once again Charles Macbeth, with none to dispute his author ity, was Mayor of Charleston. There was not a cloud in the sky. Nature smiled while hearts were bowed down and hope was dead. Not a soldier re mained. There weae none to -defend, none to save. "Our friends the enemy" did not realize that the prize they bad sought so long was at last within their grasp. The evacuation by the Confed erate forces was completed on the night of February 17, 1865. Not until the next day did the Federal troops take passession. Charleston, m terms, was never surrendered. Mayor Macbeth merely notified "the General "command ing the Army of the United States at Morris Island," on the morning of the 18th, at follows: "The military au thorities of the Confederate States have evacuated the city. I have remained to enforce law and preserve order, nntil you take 6uch steps as you may think best." .The missive was entrusted to Aldermen G. W. Williams and Gilliland and duly delivered. Learning that, the United. States troops were landing on Atlantic wharf, Mr. Williams went to that place and had an interview with Col. Bennett, who was there in command. Atter this interview Col. Bennett wrote a note to Major Macbeth, Raying : 'The troops under my command wilt ren derveiy possible assistance to your well disposed citizens in extinguishing - the fires now burning." A guard was pro cured ' to protect the mills and ware ehouses containing provisions. To Mayor Macbeth. it' was largely due that the craziness of patriotism did not find expression in wholesale burnin g. 4 . There were reckless spirits who-;de6itetl to vtnake Charleston a new Mecpw."4 InflexiblOj and resolute, there was iarMayor M atbeth a 'cool j udgment which -made himy at such a time, a fit guard fan of the people against them selves: Charleston was not surrendered, but Charleston was not sacrificed. And such was the confidence of the victors in Mayor Macbetha ability and honor that he remained in office until his successor, Col. Gallard, was : quietly elected under the laws of theState.'; - Many Miserable People drag themselves aooat wiwuauiog-swengui, ieeung inat they are steadily sinking into their graves when; by using Parker's Ginger Tonic, they would find a cure commenc ing 'with' the ; first dose, and vitality and strength surely coming back to them.
