It is cow estimated that the loss of life by the burning of the King Theatre, at Vienna, will reach nearly 700 peraeni The correct number is not yet fally a certaiaed. bat the loss was fearful 'and the scenes at the fire truly appalling. ; New York State, sayg the Tribune, 5s again under obligation to the stalwarts. They have deprived her of the Speaker ship of the House of Representatives First and last, Air. Lonkung has con. trived to be of tremendous value to his own State. Germany is declared to be the firs cation of the world in the number of her special asylums for the relief and cure o the afflicted. For deaf mules she has 31 asylums; for the blind, 31; for lunatics, 39, and for epileptics, 11; her total is 176. France ranks next after her with 70. and England nest with fiS. Kussia has only 18. Two members of the municipal govern ment of Cincinnati have been indicted for bribery. An alderman and a council, man both attempted to make money by selling their votes, and were, caught. The alderman valued his vote at 81,300 and the councilmau his at 92,000. Jndg ingfrom this exposure municipal politics in Cincinnati are as bad as in Philadel phia or New York. j m, m mm Mr. Edward McPhersoo, who is the new clerk of the House, is an old stager on the floor of Congress. He represent ed his district in Pennsylvania in the Thirty sixth Congress, and again in the Thirty-eighth he was elected to tho po sition of clerk, which he filled long and acceptably, e is now nity-one years of age, and he will enter upon his duties with the advantage of large experience and with a considerable reputation that is literary as well asjjblitical. The cotton mills of Georgia have aver aged 14 per cent, on the capital invested duriag the past year. Yet, one Mr. Barker, all the way from Lewis ton, Me., says that cotton lactones cannot be made to pay in the South. He is inter ested in man factures nd oacrhtto know. bat "figures won't lie." In contradic tion to his oracular wisdom, capitalists of Boston, New York and Philadelphia have recently subscribed $400,000 to a new enterprise, known as the John P. Xing Manufacturing Company, at Au gusta, (Ja., which starts with a capital of 51,000,000, the stock of which, not al ready taken by the Northern capitalists, as we have mentioned, has been taken by the citizens of Georgia. This makes over $3,000,000 which have been invest ed in Augusta cotton mills within the past three years. It is estimated that the number of immigrants that will nuke new homes in this country in th-i year commencing July 1st, 1881. and ending July 1st, 1882 will rrach the immense total of 1,500, 000. This estimate is predicated upon tho ratio of immigration since the 1st o? last July and upon the great military preparations which are being made throughout Europe. Ot these immigrants the greater por tion come from Germany. About one third are of that nationality while the priacipal portion of the rest are from Great Britain, and Ireland and. Scandi navia. Nearly all these new comen flock immediately to the great North west where the - soil is productive ana" the climate is congenial to. their ragged natures. " , r. ! How long this influx of foreigners "to our shores will continue, it is impossible to tell, but so long as such strict mili tary rules rules that compel so many yearB of military service from every mah able or liable to do service as a soldier continues, we may expect no cessation: " -.VJ V, The political situation in the "Oil, Dominion" is by no means serene. ,The Republicans' claim that,.t as - it t was fey their vote Mahone : waaj iurr ed a" seat in the United States' Sen ate, they are fairly entitled to consider ation and a share of tho spoils for their services, and demand that they should have the riht to name Mahone's colleague. To this demand "Mahone objects, but insists that Riddleberger, a Repudiationist like himself, should be given the place. Prominent Republic cans have applied to the President for his intercession in the matter, but he gave them cold comfort and they can hope for no interference from hira.-"Ma hone seems to be in fall father:wit&Ahe administration and he can snap bis fin gers at bis late Republican allies with all the contimpt imaginable. Riddle berger is his man and he will undoubted ly be elected without opposition. Lewis, the choice of the Republicans, has given up the contest as it has been ascertained that Riddleberger has secured the pledge of neatly erery Republican voter. -v.
