Hamlet" the master production of Shakespeare's wonderful mind was pre sented to an intensely interested andience at the Opera House in this city, last night, with Air. Frank Mayo in the title rohf Owing to the lateness of the hour when the company arrived in the city and the necessary time required in pre piration, the curtain did not rise until about 9 jo'clock, causing considerable impatience in the expectant audience. But when the curtain rose upon the first act, all impatience ceased, aud in very! lew moments the entire audience were completely absorbed iu the play, following the actors with the closest attention and with unflagging interest until the curtain dropped upon the last act, which did not occur until shortly after midnight. of the performence, we may say that we were agreeably disappointed. The Hamlet of Mr. Mayo far exceeded our expectations, and in many respects was simply superb. There Were a few unpleasant mannerisms in the open jag scene, but as the play pro gressed and he become warmed tip to the work, his whole being seemed embodied in the character he impersonated. lie has a fine stage presence and a good voice, although in some passages there was an indistinctness in articulation which might possibly be the result of a cold, or possibly from some defect in the acoustic properties of the house, as we have noticed the same trouble before with good elocutionists. His soliloquy commencing with, "To be or not to be," was particularly fine and his advice to the "players" was perfect. His support was excellent throughout. Miss Laura Chancey, as OpJieh'a, was superb and won the hearts and sympathies of the entire audience. The accusing scene be tweenHalmet and his mother, Queen Ger trude, (Jennie Jewell Hotchkiss) was. a wonderful piecet of acting on the part of both. The play was - a success in its entirety and we hope that a crewded house, which they richly deserve, may greet Mr. Mayo and his company to night, j , The Publishers of the Richmond, Va. Sherman, of the steamer John Dawson, vtho, by the way, is a clever gentleman and good looking withal, informs ns that on the passage down yesterday from Point Caswell, he passed twenty-four rafts of timber and naval stores in Black river before he en tered upon the Cape Fear. They wero in three groups, in the largest of which there were twelve, and so densely packed were they in that crooked stream that he had great difficulty in getting the steam er past them. He also reports that thej river was rising rapidly yesterday when he left Point Caswell; and that there were indi cations of a big freshet. ! : Freshwater Perch, Trout and Black fish Hooks and Lines. The gale of wind with which we have been visited to day, commenced quite early in the morning and increased in violence,, though fitfully, until, 12.20 p. m., when it blowed at the rate of 45 miles per hour. One of the first freaks of the gale, I which came from the Southwest, was to break the steamer - -i Waccamav:, which wasjnade fast to a wharf on the opposite side of the river from her moorings and float her across to this side, bringing up at the Princess street docs. There was no serious dam age done to the steamer, but as she! had her anchor down at the time, in coming, across the river it caught and parted the cable of the Signal Service telegraph pine, thereby interrupting commu nication with Smithville, from whence many are solicitous to hear.. The steam tugs Modoc and, Siain "also parted their moorings and drifted to this side of the river, but sustained no serious damage. The schooaer Thomas IS PitUbury, which was fast at Chad bourn's wharf, parted her moorings and drifted above the dry dock before she w brought up and secured. The lighter Washington also got adrift, but was secured and made fast before any seri ous damage resulted, r .
