J THE DAILY REVIEW. JOSH. T. JAMES, Editor Prop'r WILMINGTON, N. O. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7. 1883. "ir Entered at the Postofflce at Wilmington. K. C, as Second-Class Mutter. ve do not receiro the New York Timtt but a friend who was in New Pork last week has sintwaa clipping from that paper, relative to the port of Wilmington and its railroad system which we publish in fall elsewhere. It is said to have been written bj J.;C. L. Harriss, of Raleigh. To OuO at all conversant with affairs here Mr. Harriss' ignorance of the sob- jVet of which he writes is apparent at a gUuce. Hia aasertioDS relation to the through connections made 'by. the Bal- eigh & AuguBta trains would hove been just as correct three years ago ag it is 10 day. Passengers irom Raleigh oTj Charlotte went thfoogb'then in sleepers, just as they do tp-clav, and this embraces, of course, nine tenths of the through travel on the fat -night trains.. As for the connection which Col. Robinson can make with Charleston and. other point" South by building: from Hamlet to f)ar lijjgtoa, IS miles, the reference shows cp Mr. Harriss ignorance most thoroughly. Why Col. Robinson should build from . Hamlet to Darlington to strike the iys tem of roads he touches at Wadesboro' now is incomprehensible The Cheraw k Salisbury road is sow completed through to Wadesboro, and Darlington is directly on the routo from Wadesboro to Florence, and on a line owned and con . trolled in the same interest, that of the W. k Wl and W.f C. k A. roads. Mr., Harriss' intimation that Col. Bob, inson bought the Carolioa Central be cause" he is a great (riend to Senator JSTance, and because he "intends to stand by and aid Senator Vance during the, campaign," is simply absurd, and is hardly complimentary to Col. Robinson. Railroad kings, jrreat as they are in these days, do not 'carry railroads two hundred and fifty miles long in their breeches pockets to be hauled -forth and operated for the benefit of any particular a m ' I J! 3 ' party or 01 any particular lnaiviuuai. Mr. Harriss' remarks relative to the "decline ot . Wilmington" seem to; par take of the nature of a willful misrepre sentation. Wherein is the decline?- Wilmington, during tne past decade, has rained fullv five thousand inhabit ants, an increases of nearly forty per cent. In 1873 maximum high water on the bar at the mouth of the river was 12 i feet; tody it is 17$ feet, a gain of 5 feet clear, in nine years, with a prospect of a till farther flrratifvinsr. gain in the near future. These figures are drawn from ficial reports and they speak Tor them selves. And here are some other figures. The net gain in exports of cotton and naval stores for the crop year to 31st January,' 1832. are nearly $800,000. This crop year is reckoned from Sept. 1st for cotton and April 1st for naval stores. The gain in lumber alone for the month of January. 1832, against January, 1881, was about $200,000. We have not the figures at hand and cannot obtain them in time for this issue, bnt -we feel sure that the gain in exports of lumber is not for the month of January alone but that there has been an increase for months previous to January and that the pre, ent crop year to date will show a net in- crease on the previous year of something like $1,200,000, and this estimate does not include rice, peanuts and other arti cles of lesser value. The figures we giveJ are taken from the books kept at the' Produce Exchange and are therefore thoroughly correct. They were publish ed by us in fr II, article by article, in last Saturday's issue of theRirixw. Does this loak aa thousrh Wilminsrtoa was on "the decline?'' ..Reduction ascending, 'perhaps There are other points which we miqht make here but havo neither the time nor pace at our disposal to day. But here is one more point w hich we mus t make. While nearly, if not quite, ail of Jthe Atlantic and Gulf ports have fallen off this year in the receipts of cotton, as compared with last year. .Wilmington has made a decided and a gratifying rain. The receipts of . cotton for the crop year up to January 31st foot up 116321 bales, against 101,581, for the game time in 1881, SKgain of 15,239 bales, r 15 per cent. Sublimely Superb. RAILWAY WORK AUD PLAFlrf. TIUE BECSNT PURCHASE OF TflECAB OLMJL CESTUI Through Trains From Baleisb to Charlotte Flans or he oeaboard mud Roanoke Conpan j. Ralziqh. N. C, Feb. 2. Passing events of the last' two mouths have shown that the purchase of the Carolina Central Railroad, running from Wil mington to Charlotte and from Char lotte west to Shelby, in Cleveland Coun ty, by Mr. John Robinson, for. the Sea board k Roanoke Railroad Company, id a matter ot much more significance and of much greater importance than was ut first supposed. Peisoas who own a ma jority of the stock of the Sea-board & Roanoke Company also own a controll ing interest in tho Raleigh & liafetun Company. -The. 'trains' en the?e two roads now ran through from Norfolk to Raleigh witnout change. The AugusjU Air Lice Railroad, which ruus trujt Raleigh to littmbt on the Caroiiua Ctu tral Road, is alsoowntd ulq controlled Dy the tame ereoni;. raeSengers Iroui Norfolk uow change at Raleigh uod again at Hamlet. The" pucnu3e of tne Carolina will euable the purchasers in a, lew weeks to run their traiDS through from Norfolk to Charlotte without change of cars. It is expected that this arrangement will increase tho travel over tne Sea-board' liue because the Bay line is eo popular vvtih all who have once enjoyed tne pleasure and . comfort of a trip from Norfolk to Baltimore, and vice versa, over this line. Tnen agaiu, if Mr. Robinson, who is President ot the three compauies already mentioned, is on the look-out for au opportunity to extend his road further South, he can now do so. From Hamlet to Darling ton S. C, it is only 18 miles. Complete this gap,' and through connection can then be made with Charleston, Savannah, and other Southern cities. The tilling in of this gap would enable the Seaboard Road to. compete at Weldon, N. C, lor the travel to Florida, "which now takes the VUauugtou & l&eldon Road at Weldou and goes on by Wilmington. There: aro upward of 40,000 pereoos .who annually 1 pass through this State on their way to F lorida. The1 greater portion of this large nurcher goes by Wilmington, a few go by way of Greeus boro and Atlanta over the Richmond & DauTille line. The building ot the link from Hamlet to Darlington would open a third line, shorter and more direct tuan either of the others, and would, for these reasons; obtain a fair share of this travel. As to the increase of freight, it was considered by Mr, Robinson that the nairow guage roads running from Ches, ter, S. C, to Wadesboro. on the Carolina Central Road, would be the means of greatly increasing the freight traffic over the Carolina Central Road. This connection opens up a large cotton belt that will add from 50,000 to 100,000 bales of cotton to the number heretofore transported over this line, because, charges being equal, ootton shippers prefer Norfolk to Wilmington or Charles ton. At Lincolnton, beyond Charlotte, the Chester Narrow Guage fcoad again connets with the Carolina Central Road. FroniXincolnton the narrow guage road runs north to Newton, in Catawba" County, and then on to Lenoir, in Cald well County. From Lenoir to the Cran berry Iron Works, in Mitchell County, is about 30 miles 1 hia piece of road will be completed during; this yar. A few miles beyond the iron works is Johnson'a Depot, on 'the East-Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad, where the narrow guage road will end. When completed to the Cranberry Iron Works the company owning these works in teud to begyf.ta get out large quantities ot pigjr,on Jthat will be shipped over the narro w-;guage c road - to Lincolnton and from -there to. -Norfolk over Rooinion's line.- The! Cranberry ore j is the equal of any iron ore in America. There appears t9 bes an " inexhaustible supply. The miuehae .not.been. developed for the want of a railroad to ship the iron. Great returns are expected. from this one article bf freight by Mr. Robinson. Another reason for the purchase was the fact that another cOmpaay, chartered in 1872 and headed by Col. L. W. Hum phrey.of Goldsboro, has had a hew Hue surveyed from Suffolk Va., j to Golds boro, N. C. The projectors of this new line think that a line competing with the Sea-board A Roanoke Road from Nor folk to Goldsboio weuld make paying dividends. Connection at Goldsboro with the North Carolina Road, as man aged by the Richmond & Danville Com pany, is considered by Col. Humphrey and his associates as a matter ot great importance to their line, as it would prevent a diversion of) freight and passen gers at Charlotte and would open up another competing line from Norfolk to Raleich bv way of Goldsboro- There has beeji a fight of long standing between the Richmond k Danville Company and the Seaboard k Roanoke .Company. Air. Robinson President of the Sea board Company, is a great ator Z. B. Vance (The triend of Sen fight of the Richmond k Danville Company j has no doubt been pushed further because of the zest added to the contest oy tne aaaition- al fact that it was killing Vance through his friend Robinson. I It is an open se cret that the Richmond k Danville Com pany has been very anvious for some time to purchase a controlling interest in the Sea-board k Roanoke Company. Whether the surTey of the proposed new line from Norfolk to Goldsbore and Ral eigh was a feint to scare the stockholders of the Sea-board k Roanoke Company with vim to nnrchaso bn the ! pari of the Richmond k Danville Company at decreased figures is as vet unknown. XI is reported on good authority that the Richmond Danville Company offered $4(flrpeXtbaieroT an Sea- bCiXdtock fijw couia not, una ,a seuer at that price. There 'pas been a lull in the movements, ad UiKox mocew jiue since JArm Robinson : p'urcliasedlle Caro- Usa Ceatral Uoad. CoLHiaparey tsyv that the road will be built, and that in a very short time ; that the proposed new line is demanded by the growing needs of the country, and. that it is to be budt as a purely business enterprise. W hen Col. Humphrey got the charter through the Legislature in 1872. it was with a view to ran through North Carolina by way of Goldsboro and Fayetterille, thence to Columbia, S. C, and ioto Georgia, and that ultimately connection would be made with one of Jay Gould's Texas k Pacific lines, which would be the cheapest built road and the shortest line from the Southwest to tioewaUr at Norfolk. This view was held out a tew months ago, while Gould and Hunting, don were trying to cut each other's throat beyond the Mississippi.- A truce was put to the fight in November last, which may have atlected in some decree the proposed ucw hue headed by Col. Hump! rey. . It was announced at the time Mr. Robinson purchased the Carolina Central that the purchase was made as an iu vest ment and not for speculation; that the cash Wfg paid and no bonds were issued to raise the money to complete the trade. After a careful examination into the management of the i arolina Central, Mr. Robinson became satisfied that the locl traffic and fare would more than meet all the obligations low resting on the road, and that ultini&telj, as belore rutDtioi:ed, the road, ts a feeder to the line to Nor folk, would be exceedingly valuable. In addition to the financial re-isous that induced the purchase, it is surmised, with apparent good reason, that the purchase of the Caroli a Central Road was made in order to prevent the Kicnmoud e l)anille Company from buying the road. Mr. Robinson intends tosiaud by ;. and aid Senator Vance during the campaign of this year in bis fight upon the Rich. moLd and i anyille Company, and it was the part of wisdom to increase the miles of railroad in North Carolina as coolroil ed by Mr. Robinsoa by the addition of 200 miles, from Wilmington to Charlotte, and to prevent the common enemy from getting control of the road in question. There can be no doubt that the manage ment of the Carolina Central, in connec tion with the Augusta Air Line, the Raleigh and Ga9ton, and the toeaboard and Roanoke Railroads, will greatly damage Wilmington. 'I here aie preg nant signs that Wilmington is on the decline. 1 he harbor is insufficient for vessels of Urce burden, aud while the efforts ol the United States to deepen the channel by etoppiug up inlets and dredging may make some improvement, it seems impossible to increase the depth of the water to anything life that at Norfolk. Of course, all freight not or dered otherwise will be shipped to Nor folk over Mr. Robinson s roads. j It is the Height of Folly to wait un til you are in bed with disease you may not get over for months, when ynu can be cured during the early svmptoms by Parker's Ginger Tonic.
