THE DAILY REVIEW. J OH H. T. JAMES, Editor 3c Prop'r WILMINGTON, N. O. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1882. Entered at the Pottofiice at Wilmington. Ni ' C as Second-Class Matter. ! The outlook for the manufacture . of pig iron ia lha South, during 1882, it said to be most promising, particularly in .Central Alabama. ' The predictions ere 400.000 tons, or about 33 pe cent increase over last year. SeTeral ot the largest farnaces in the South have lately bi en compelled to stop work in come quenca of being out of ore.- Ex-Treasurer Spinner, who is now eighty years of age, perfected his fa uious autograph when he was a young maD, working at harness making in Her liimer, New York. He practiced, writ iD it hocr after hoar, and- his .old part cer aAid a year or two ago that he has seen bs nuch as two huudred sheets of fokcp covered with ire attempts. ' Mr. llinfj 13 nsukicg thiogs lively for the adtniuUtiution aud others who have fcrrtijed tbtmseivca against him, and we op;ue that they will find him a ' tough customer' to..' whip. We do not tak much stock in Mr. Blaine, but we are compelled to admit that be is a man of great talents, und'is undoubtedly one of - the ablest and shrewdest politicians in the country. , : : i - - - ' t - . .... ., . There is a war-cloud io the b ait, with . Egypt as the centre of the disturbance. EujiUud and France have come to the conclusion that an armed intervention iu the affairs of the Pttaraohs is , neceV try, but Germany, Austria, Russia, and England hare put in a protest, and thus the matter stands. One side or the other must back down or inaugurate a war of huge proportions. The prize fighting ruffians, Sullivan of Boston, and Rym, of Troy, with their detestable crew of pugilistic blackguards, ports, roughs and plug ogliea, met and fought at Mississippi City, -yester-' day, the 7th instant. There was no in- ; terference by the civil authorities, and do interruption in their bloody and brutal work. Sullivan won the fight in nine rouna-. i nus enaea a disgusting auu ue grading exhibition of physical strength, kill and mulnrance which was a disgrace and ahme m this civilized age and coon try. Amonir the latent devices of the fickle ruler, Fashion, is that of long kid gloves of a , flaming red color for ladies. The general effect of this style on a lovely female as she enters a reception or ball is overpowering. Her hnds present "'a most sanguinary and, indeed, murderous appearance, and every movement of these m embers leads one to believe' that tho impulses of the owner are bloody, starved and ravenous," You might imagine yourself at a ball fight, and that this was the red flag waved for the pur pose of urging on the infuriated animal, Another pleasing feature of this article of apparel is that it makes the hand of the wearer look about twice its original size; so that the eflect on a female who wears a number eight glove can be imagined. .. Under the old English law, from which comes the Maryland law, which is in force in the District of Columbia, in re gard to executions, it is necessary that the culprit be hung with a chain instead of a rope. The rope, however, has been used, both in Maryland and the Dittrict of Columbia, for the last seventy-five years, but orr.e of the best lawyers con tend that it cannot be used in accordance with the law. From this it would seem that Guiteau should be hung with a chain. We hope the law will be faith, fully executed, and if a chain is necessary to his taking off, .why. let him have oue, by all means Doubtless ' he would pre ler a chain, as it would give his name a new phise io the notoriety which he covets, uml, so far as we are concerned, we hope he may be accommodated. Senator Bt-ck, in his recent speech on the Arrets of Pepsions Act," showed .-that, according, to the estimates-of Com missioner Bentley, who preceded the present incumbent, ComxaissionerDudley, in the Pension oSce, $10,000,000 will be paid out of the Treasmry during the next fiscal year to bogus pensioners.; That is, that the government will be actually robbed of that amount during the- time indicated by those who have not a parti cle of right to the money. To show how the government is being swindled by ""1 1 ; ..i.l..t. ftanantiAng ho Snnafn? oade: the following exhibit : In 1871 the total number of applications i filed was 43,080 ; in 1872, there were 28,000; in 1873 there were 18,000 ; in 187i there were 16 000. and In 1875 there wewil8 (100. Then the claiia aguts wi at to work sending circulars broadcast over the country, and in 18J6 the claims filed reached 23,000 ; in 1877 they reached 22.000, and in 1878, the yearjthe Arrrears of Pensions ; bill ' became a law, they reached 44,000 ; in 1879 they were swell ed to 57,000, and in 1880 they went up to 141,000. From this appalling exhibit Senator Beck concludes "that $350,000, 000 will be the minimum amount that will be required. 1 '" The highest salary ever paid to any man for a given number of : years will be paid to Baldwin, the NewarkJ New Jer sey, bank cashier, who has recently been sentenced to the penitentiary! for fifteen years for robbing that Lank. The amount of his stealings footed up $2,500,000, which would give him 'a yearly income of $166,666.66$ per annum for the entire term of his imprisonment, purely this is a big salary, but whether Baldwin will care to look at the matter jjn ucti a 1 i h t is doubtful. - The financial part of it may be cheerful and consoling, but it is a question whether it Jou'd' afford euffi oient consolation to lleviate the pangs of fifteen years' forced retirement. . On the 28th init. there is to be de livered iu thf House of Kepresentatives a memorial oration eulogistic of the life and gervices of the late President4 Gar field. Mr Blaine, c Maine, is to be the orator,, and' it is hinted ' thai he will, j i after the manner of Marc Antony over the corpse of Czpsar, improve the' occasion to make capital for himself.' A corres pondent of the Washington Po?.t writes tbat "ar warm friend of !r. Blaine has said that it was going to be a very curi ous performance," addirig, "There will be a good deal more of 'Blaine r that meeting than of Garfield. Exactly what the orator of the occasion will pay cannot now bepropbosied, but hisjrorda will be chosen, II is position is one of extreme delicacy, and the effects of bis speech wili extend as far into the Inture as the year 1884." i is .
