Pancned Coins.
It is a difficult matter now to pass a,coin
witha hole'in it. The banks heMjfeluse
to receive them-at par and every" coin is
now scrutinized closely as it is' received
over the counter of every trader. This
is as it; should be. That which was once
a nuisance has become an abomination.
If every banking hoese in the country
would but refuse to receive these muti
lated coins they ytf uid soon drop out of

II ow to Send Flowers by Post.
The fashion of sending flowers by post
j ! -
has become such a favorite mode of late
that directions for their safe packing may
be found useful : A card board boxi
about seven inches long by four and a
half broad, such as shop-keepers have for
crochet cotton, is the 1 convenient size,
and though at first sight it may ap
pear too small to contain more than a
dozen blooms, it is wonderful1 how much
can be put in with judicious packing.
In the bottom of the box lay a little
slightly damp moss, then a layer of flow
ers and a few green leaves, another lay
er of flowers and leaves on top, and so
on, till the box is nearly full, '.then finish
with an upper stratum of moss.:' Pan
sies and lilies-of-the-valley travel well
and will come out as fresh after
a twenty-four hours' journey and
in almost as good & condition
as when first packed. If & difficulty
occurs as to the length, the stalk should
always be cut, as the bloom will j not
stand bending. Geranium blooms ' are
too lightly set in the calyx to bear a
journey, but primroses, violets, anem
ones, sweet peas and verbenas, mignon
ette, tulips, rosebuds and forget me nots,
are all treasures to use for, this purpose.
After unpacking a box. of flowers, place
the tips of their stalks in boiling water,
let then remain for about five minutes,
remove them, cut off a tip from each
stalk, and put in clear, cold water.
Treated in this way, the most faded
flowers will generally revive.
Wishing for Death. I
Since my return from the army 1 have
suffered with severe pains in my lower
limbs, which at times totally unfitted me
for any kind of business; and at other
times the pain was so severe that I wish
ed for death to relieve me of my suffer
ings. After having tried the best phy
sicians and various well-known remedies
without benefit, I procured a bottle of
St. Jacobs Oil which relieved the pain
instantly. ! M. Achknback,

Sot a True BUI.
In the case of Thomas J. Murphy, who
was arrested in the early" part of Jan
nary, charged with the larceny of a watch
at Capt. J. M. McGowan'a saloon, and
who has been in confinement in the conn
ty jail ever since, the Grand Jury failed
to jfind a true bill and he was discharged.
Murphy came here with Coop's circus,
in which he held a responsible position,
and shortly after the company left here
returned to the city, arid in a few days
was arrested as above stated. He be
longs in New York City and.intends to
return there. '
Beelected.
Rev. S. Mendelsohn was re-elected
minister of the Temple of Israel, by the
congregation of that Church, at a meet
ing held recently, and his salary was
also increased. He has served his peo
ple six years, and the fact that his salary
has been voluntarily increased is an evi-
i
denca of the esteem in which he is held.

Shameful !
There was some outrageous conduct in
this city last night. There is a gang of
young rowdies developed on each Valen
tines Day, who go around to different
houses and throw bats against the
doors aad windows. Last night was no
exception to the rule, but their conduct
then, in some instances, was a little
worse than we have ever known it before;
We know of one instance where a win
. . i
dow was broken and another where
the- gate was taken off and the
steps broken up, and there are numerous
reports of doors badly battered and the
ladiesand children of residences fright
ened. Such things are a shame, and a
disgrace to any community and a reward
should be offered by the city authorities
with the view of punishing the young
rascals to the full extent of the law.
