The nominee for the Berlin Mission,
Bayard Taylor's former station, is called
eEgy" Sargent, became ha was burned
in effigy by the people of California, who
became indignant over his performance
as boss and supporter of the schemes of
the monopolist.
Some time ago Mrs. Brown, of Allen
County, Ky., gave birth to twins. Not
withstanding there is bat four minutes
difference in tleir ages, yet one was born
in 1881' and the other in 1832, one In
December and the othr in January, one
on Sunday and the other on Monday t-
Sargent, of California, has been unan
imously confirmed as Minister to Ger
many, and he will undoubtedly accept.
If be is half us willing to tro as a majori
ty of tbo people of . the country aro to
have him go, be wjll accept at once and
take the very first outward bound steam
er. -
Conkling has been confirmed by the
D. 8. Senate as Associate J as lice of the
Supreme Court, but it is, not considered
probable that ha will accept tho posi
tion. He may accept, however, in order
to spite those oi his own party who have
bitterly, denoanced his nomination- t
would be just like him.
The Key, Ezra Winslow, of Boston,
whose forgeries and flight made a great
stir several years -ago, is still living in
Buenoe Ayres. He lived there awhile
unidentified, under the name of Low, and
became superintendent of a Sunday
school; but the church turned him out
on learning who and what ho was. He
married a wealthy woman, became a sue
cessful politician, and is cow liviug sump
tuously.
Judge Baxter, United States district
judge oi Ohio, decides: "The legislature
of Ohio has authorized the establishment
of public schools; that is to say, they
have authorized the classification of the
school children, and have authorized the
negroes to be educated separately in one
school, from the, white children, and the
white children separately from the negro.
Now, that is no wrong to the negro.
The legislature has a right to do that.''
Bradlaugh, who was expelled from the
British House of Commons on account
of being an Atheist, has been re-elected
by his constituency, and the question
beore Parliament will now be, " What
are we going to do about it ?" If . he i3
now admitted it will be a surrender by
the House and will establish a precedent
which may prove annoying in the future,
and if they again expel him he will prob
ably bo at Once returned by his friends.
It is an unpleasant muddle in English
politics which will seriously affect Church
and State in the end.
All the merits of the eucalyptus tree
have not hitherto been recognized. . Re
ports have recently coma from Australia
that its leaves are the special abhorrence
of all inects, which prey upon fruit
trees, against whoso depredatiops they
furnish a perfect protection if the ground
beneath be only strewn with them. If,
however, it be desired to make assurance
doubly sure, it is only necessary to bind
strips of eucalyptus bark around the
trunks of the fruit trees. These are the
first reports, and experiments now going
on in Australia and in- South Africa will
soon show whether they are true or not.
A dastardly, but, thank Qod, a futile
attempt was mado yesterday, the 2nd
instant, to assassinate Queen Victoria,
while walking from the train in which
she .had jus t arrived from London, to her
carriage.- The would be assassin fired
one shot, and was in the act of firing
again, when the pistol was knocked, from
his hand and he was seized by the police.
