that he may "live long and prosper."

lime which was washed into the pond at
the time of the fire. Tka building in
whieh the lime was stored was contiguous
to the pond and considerable quantities
of lime were washed into the latter with
the deadly effect' we have mentioned.
This is very much to be regretfed. Mr.

a number of the noted German Carp,
some of which were 14 inches in length,

Big Words.
In promulgating your esoteric cogita
tions or articulating superficial sentimen
talities and philosophical or psychologi
cal observations, beware of platitudinous
ponderosity. Let your conversation
possess a clarified conciseness, compacted
comprehensibleness, coalescent consis
tency, and a concatenated cogency.
Eschew all conglomerations of flatulent
garrulity, jejune babblement, and asinine
affectations, Let your extemporaneous
descanting and unpremeditated expatia-
tionj have intelligibility and veracious
vivacity, without rhodomontade or thra
sonical bombast. Sedulously ayoid all
polysyllabic profundity, pompous pro
lixity, psittaceous vacuity, ventriloquial
verbosity, and volutive vapidity. Shun
double entendres, prurient jocosity, and
pestiferous nrofanitv. apparent or non-
apparent. In other words, talk plainly,
naturally, sensibly, truthfully, purely,
mr
and don't use big words.

This Hoi-Diaz's Fire.
At about 2;30 o'clock this morning, a
fire was discovered in the building on
Marcus' Alley, between Front and Sec
ond streets, in which Messrs. E. G. Bar

of lime. The alarm was promptly given,
and, although the ram fell in torrents! at
the time, the fire department was on
hand with its accustomed activity in
such emergencies. The roof of the
building was totally destroyed, as was
also the lime, the latter being fully cov
ered by insurance. ' I

A Narrow Escape- i
On Sunday last three young ladies of
Bladen county, Misses Lizzie J6nes, Sue
C. Smith, and Ella King, had a very
narrow escape from drowning while re-
turning from church at Kelley's Cove,
to their homes on the opposite side of the
river. The ladies, who resided at uar
ver's Creek, were escorted to church by
Messrs J. D. Smith, engineer of the
mm- mm m m m . ' '
steamer Wave, Wiley Ford and James
and .Lester Devane. After the services
at the church were over the ladies and
their escorts repaired to the landing at
the river, and the ladies and Mr. Smith
were in the boat ready to cross the
river. Mr. Deyane shoved the bow of the
boat off and unfortunately it jwas in some
manner capsized, precipitating the ladies
and Mr. Smith into the river, which at
that point is about 25 feet deep. Mr.
Smith caught Miss Smith and swam
ashore with her. Mr. Wiley Ford, who
was on the bank, plunged in the water to
the rescue of Misses Jones and King.
The ladies were very much alarmed and
caught Mr. Ford in such a manner that
his arms were pinioned to his side for a
short time, when, after sinking below the
surface, he extricated his arms and held
the ladies up until Mr. Smith could come
to their assistance. When the two were
reached by Mr. Smith, Miss Jones had
sunk beneath the surface of the water.
but the gentlemen brought her to the
top, aud swam ashore ' with both of the
ladies. On reaching the bank the ladies
and gentlemen were to nearly exhausted
that they were unable to move. The
conduct of Messrs. Smith and Ford de
serves much praise. Had it not been for
their prompt, manly and self-sacrificing
action the ladies would have undoubtedly
shared a watery grave.
