Wilmington and Baltimore. t . i A Review reporter met yesterday a gentleman from Baltimore! wbo has been for many years connected with the steamship lines from Baltimore to Southern parts. He informed us that there were capitalists in Baltimore who were now ready and willing to put on five steamers, two to run between Bal timore and Wilmington, and two be tween Baltimore and Charleston, and the fifth to run alternately to Charles ton and Wilmington as the business might require. This gentleman says that it will be necessary for a portion of the capital to bo raised here in Wil mington. We sincerely hope that some action may be taken in this direction for such a line of steamers would be of great benefit to Wilmington and would, we are sure, divert a considerable portion of the .freight on the upper part of the ! Carolina Central Railroad to this city which without thiB line would seek an outlet via Portsmouth to Baltimore. Every encouragement should be given to this scheme, and we know bf no better way -than through the Chamber of Commerce the Pro duce Exchange and the Board of Trade, We have nothing to lose in this move ment, and much indeed to be gained, and we hope that our suggestion may. ba the means of putting the ball m mo tion, and that soon wo may be able to report favorably. In 1866-7-8-9 and 70 there was a fine business done between Baltimore and Wilmington, and why not anticipate a business for hereafter larger than at that time? Let our en terprising merchants put their shoul ders to the wheel, ind success will crown their efforts. I . About aWilmingtonian. It is always a pleasure for us to chron icle the, success of a Wilmingtonian, and we publish herewith the following complimentary notice taken from Jhe Atlanta Constitution of the 23d inst. : The people of Atlanta will regret to learrt tnat Professor Agostini will not give any of his delightful entertain ments at DeGive's this summer. Dur ing the three seasons that . Professor Agostini has been here tho entertain ments which he has. given have been among the best amateur performances ever presented here, and have been uni versally enjoyed. Since his return from Wilmington. XC, he has been over whelmed with the duties of his acade my, and wiU not havo time to arrange for any of his pleasant entertainments further than the usual Friday soirees and Saturday matinees at his academy. At theso the, attendance is overwhelm ingly large ; "and even standing room is eagerly shought for. When Prof. Agos-' tini returned from Wilmington, it was his- intention to teach a school of only fifty pupils. The number. However, has increased since the first of March to two hundred which amount to the neat sum of two u thousand -dollars for twenty-four lessons. - Professor Agos tini was greatly missed, during his so- jonrn in W ilmington, ne leis nere with the expectation oi remaining tnere only s short time," but an offer of a $500 school forced him to remain there for awhile; To the great delight of hi friends he returned to Atlanta" on the first of March and has quickly bnilt up his school to its present remarkable success. It is a pleasure to his friends to see him making money, but it is a source of regret that ther are thereby deprived of a large share of his society. Personally Professor Agostini is one of the most popular .men in our, city, and is one of the most perfect gentlemen one would meet in a year's travel, .Pew men have a stronger hold on the hearts of AUantfansy - , iiiurriHifP. He was laughed at by his friends, but he offered to bet $100 that ho would some day win I a large prize, i Sure enough he found that his was a half of ticket No- 6090, which had drawn $5,000, He collected it through Adams Express Company, and as he has- frequently drawn small prizes of $20 and $10 before, will send in time for May 9th, to be in the next drawing under the special supervision of Gen'ls G. One thousand feet of new hose were tested at the corner of Front and Dock streets yesterday afternoon, under the supervision of Capt. F. G. Robinson, Chief of the Fire Department. Five hundred feet have been apportioned to the Cape Fear Steam Fire Engine Com pany No 3, and the remainder has been reserved for an especial purpose. The'hose was found to be as represent ed. ! In testing the hose a test of the fire hydrant was also made, Five hun dred feet was attached to the hydrant, and .five hundred to the engine. At a given signal the water was turned on at the hydrants, and the engine commenced to pump. A stream was thrown from the hydrant one minute before the en gine threw a stream. The test as to distance was made with 1 and 11-2 inch nozzles. The hydrant threw the water further through the 1 1-2 inch nozzle than the engine did through the inch. The test was entirely satisfac tory, and proved conclusively that the hydrants would beat any engine in the country in getting on the first stream.
