The house recently occupied as a

The concert to-night at the Opera

one. Mr. VanLear has provided a fine
programme and a musical treat is in
store for those who attend.

One of the Wonders.
One of the great and marvelous won
ders of telegraphy was shown yesterday
when at 2.30 p. m., we received dis
patches from Liverpool. England, and
Paris, France, which were sent from
those cities at 4.30 p. nr., of Xhe same
day. Of course the wonder becomes
simple when we consider the equations
of time, but nevertheless, it places the
science of telegraphy as one of the most
wonderful discoveries of the age.
Cut the Hose.
Some fiend on mischief intent cat the
hose of the Brooklyn Hand Engine,
on Wednesday or Thursday night. The
hose, about 500 feet in length, was
taken off the reel and cut in pieces
from three to four feet long. The reel
and hose were in the engine house on
Brunswick street, between 6th and 7th,
and as yet there is no clue to the perpe
trator of the deed. "We hope he may
be caught, and have that justice meted
out to him whichvhe so justly deserves-

' Safe Robbery.
The office of Mr. O. G. Parsley, Jr.,
on North Water street, was entered
Wednesday night, and tho safe was
robbed of a certificate of deposit in a
city bank. The safe was not locked,
Mr. Parsley having accidentally left it
open when he closed his office for the
night. There was also a sum of money
which had been placed oathe top of the
safe, which escaped observation.
The bank was notified, and yesterday
a boy presented the certificate for pay
ment. The certificate was held but the
boy escaped and has not yet been iden
tified. 'Buclmpaiba."

. Rumored Hostile Meeting:.
The Greensboro Patriot publishes a
rumor which it got from the Charlotte
train to ' the effect that Mr. Cljas. R.
Jones, of Charlotte, and Mr. W. P.
Canaday, of Wilmington, were out for
a hostile meeting. The Patriot says :
Jones is the challenging party. The
casw belli is an editorial in the Post
charging: Jones with being "a liar, a
thief and a coward." We are reluctant
to believe that any gore will be shed,
though both combatants" have brilliant
fighting records. J ones has been blown
up on a steamboat, slumshotted, shot
at caned, bludgeoned, clubbed and
mauled, and is still a 'fine specimen of
physical manhood.
An Old Quilt.
We saw yesterday a qtiilt which is
said to be one hundred and fifty years
old. It is owned Joy Mrs. Milton Han
kins, and has been handed down from
generation to generation. It was made
in Scotland by her great-great-grandmother,
Mrs. Ewars, and is a.marrel of
neatness and tastes of the handiwork of
the lady who made it. In the centre
are embroidered figures of tropical
birds and trees, and a shepherd bearing
his crook.
In olden times, when an infant was
baptized it was carried to the church
wrapped in a quilt made of the choicest
silk. This one was made for the chris
tening quilt of her grandfather.
Victoria Concordia Crescit.
Capt. L. W. Vick, a gentleman well
known' in this eity, and a confirmed
"old bach,'1 has surprised everybody by
an unconditional surrender, after a gal
lant resistance to all matrimonial cam
paigns against him, for more years than
it would be well Jo remember now. He
was married at Greenville, on WednesJ
day morning, to Miss Sallie Cherry, a
beautiful young lady, daughter of T. R.
Cherry, Esq., of Johnston county. The
occasion is said to have been one of
rare interest A large number of wed
ding presentswere received, some of
them, we are told, of great beauty and
elegance. The gallant Captain and his
charming bride have gone Northward
on an extended tour.
The house now occupied by Mr. B
Solomon, and which has been bought
by the Messrs. Latimer, is to be re
moved by them to the Vacant lot next
to the northwest corner of Third and
Ann streets.

Rain Needed.
We understand that rain is needed
very much in the Upper Cape Fear sec
tion. It is, in fact, as we have been
told, "as dry as a powder horn." The
crops are in need of it and the farmers
are looking anxiously skyward, more
anxiously, in fact, than many of them
are in the habit of looking in that direc
tion. Tho crops, it is said, will suffer
very seriously unless there is rain dur
ing the next few days,
Bloating headaches, nervous prostra
tion and spinal weakness cured by Lydia
E. Pinkham'a Vegetable Compound.
. Clearing: Out the River.
Capt. James, with , his foree, is at
work now clearing out the Cape Fear
river under the appropriation made by
Congress. The steamboat men say,
however, that he should have taken ad
vantage of the dry spell and gone to
work at the upper end and worked
down, instead of beginning; at tide wa
ter and working up. But the present
may be only a temporary arrangement.
Capt. James is a good engineer: and
will doubtless take advantage of the
opportunities as they occur.
News and Observer.
Mr. J. A. Lone: Repudiates the
Unauthorized Use of His
Name by the Mott Concern.
As my name has been put in nomi
nation by the convention ot the7thinst.,
for the office of judge of this, the 5th dis
trict, I deem it just to myself that I
should say that my name was used in
that convention without my knowledge
or consent in any way whatsoever. I
had never a thought of such a thing,
nor had anyone directly or indirectly
mentioned or hinted it to me, and since
it was made I have respectfully de
clined to accept the nomination.
My position on' the question of pro
hibition last year, as one of the oppo
nents, doubtless had much to do with
influencing the convention to put my
name on the I ticket. While it is
true I was an anti-prohibitionist,
and did what I could in my humble
way to defeat it, I never believed
the question a party one, or in any way
a test of party fealty. I never believed,
with Judge Alerrimon, the act in force
at all events, notwithstanding my re
gard for his legal attainments. The
question is now a settled one, and as
one of the Democrats who helped to
settle it, I do not propose to go outside
of the ranks of the Democratic party to
attempt to correct any supposed mis
takes it may have made in . the ''matter.
I do not propose to board the vessel of
the enemy in order to try to fecnttle my
own ship. I do propose to Stay on
board and help beat back the assaults
of the enemy, and if the ship goes
down, I propose to go down with the
ship. T. A. Loxg,
