These soli, silly, disaffected Democrats are the , forces by which a Radical grasp may t again fastened upon theT throat- of the .; dear old State, and she again be laid helpless at the mercy of an ignorant, prejudiced and heartless minority Rut the Republicans, for once, have reckoned without their host. The hopes they havebuilded upon the adop tion of their present plan will" never he realized. A few Democrats may yield to the allurements of a prospective of ficc, and allow their names to be used as a means to draw many of the rank and file 1 he sturdy and true yeomanry of the State from their allegiance and 'fidelity to her best interests, but they will be w'ofully mistaken. The delec tion of these will not draw one true and tried Democrat into the llimsy and transparent net. Those who have here tofore pretended to be Democrats, who shall give the movement their support, have in reality never been Democrats in principle, and have only awaited an opportunity lor a prospective mouthful of the loaves and Ushes of olliee to go to that jiarty or clique which offers the best opportunity for the gratification of their oflicial appetites. Debilitated persons, and sufferers from wasting diseases such as consump tion, scrofula, kidney affections, will be greatly benefited by using Brown's Iron Bitters. BY .TETjEGRAEH. cJTOON TELEGRAMS. Total (Joods returned. $7,460 . 000 70 70 Balance - ....$6,520 91 There 'were about twenty invited guests for whom (antl their entertain ers) all of the above were purchased. It was bought with the people's money, but it was not for the people to drink. There were "a few" privileged ones who were authorized to "stand up" with the foreign guests of the peo ple. We don't know how many of these there were, properly speaking, but we do know that the exhibit made by the items is a very startling one. Somebody must have been drunk at some time. For, say, one hun dred men to smoke 10,300 cigars, and 2,000 cigarettes, and chew 1 14 papers and 17 pounds of tobacco in three or four days, is accomplishing a great deal, but when it comes to the same crowd, in addition to the chewing and smoking, to hide 822 gallons oT wine, 1,020 bot tles of beer and 140 gallons (nearly four barrels) of brandies and whiskies, then we must confess that our eredulitj' is greatly taxed. There is another pecu liarity about the bill, and that is the prices paid lor the wines and liquors and cigars. These things were bought -in large quantities of each, and yot the prices paid were enor mous, and will be found, we think, in comparison, to exceed retail prices. Sherry wine costs $0 a gallon; Madi ra $6; American sherry $4.50 ($3 is a good price, at retail, for this wine); 1830 brandy $15; pale brandy and dark brandy $10; champagne $30 a dozen bottles (by the 130 cases); claret $10 a gallon (phew!); whiskey $5 a gallon, (by the barrel) ; American beer S 12.00 a barrel (nearly 10 cents a bottle) ; rum $9 a gallon, and Scotch . whiskey $0 a gallon ; cigarettes cost $G and $G.50 per thousand and cigars (bought by the thousand) 8 cents a piece fordomcstic brands and imported cigars 12$, 16$ and 17 cents each. in addition to tins were otner ex penses creating a deficiency in the ap propriation amounting to $32,323 in ad ditionto the $10,800 originally appro priated. It is understood that Mr. Vennor has consented te be placed on the retired list when he shall have achieved a vigorous snow-storm in July. That is his ultimatum. ' A Missouri woman was astounded when a man took her suddenly in his arms and jumped into a pond with her; and grateful when she learned that her dress had been in a blaze, which the leap extinguished. . . Gladstone must feel this to-day. The case is reported in the "Transac- ol the Michigan Stale Medical 52 50 ' Society of a young man who was treat- I ed, during an attack ol pneumonia, with prescriptions containing forty-nine different ingredients. He is reported as having survived. The lately deased D like of Grafton is said to have shown some years ago, to a physician who flattered himself he had cured his Grace, all the bottles of medi cine which had been prescribed, but none of which had been taken, although the patient had got well. At a great evening party in London lately, Master Galleotti, an Italian im provisatore, only nine years old, sat down to the piano and played with such wonderfulexecution that it was difficult to believe that it was a child who had such a marvelous gift. ' A wife at Boone, Iowa, got a divorce from her husband solely on testimony volunteered by her sister, who then professed to detest him ; but within a month the sister married the man, and confessed that she had schemed to part the couple tor that purpose. The grave of General A. P. Hill, in Hollywood Cemetery : Richmond, Va., has nothing to mark the spot where rests the reliiains of this brave soldier. The Republican State Convention was held at Raleigh on the 14th instant, and, as we predicted in a former issue of the Review, the ticket nominated by the so-called Liberal Convention was fully approved and endorsed. The plan was altogether too transparent to be misunderstood, and now the ball is fully opened on the Republican side. The few Democrats nominated at the former convention are to receive the support of the Republican party, and it is to be expected will be elected by Republican votes aided by disaffected Democrats.
