The city was Jet't in the dark for sev eral hours oil Monday night after the nioun had set, because the street lamps were not lighted. We thought the reg ulations in this respect were more strin gent than they seem to be. There w ere four arrests made by the police yesterday. All were taken to the iuard house, and their cases will be in vestigated by the Mayor this morning.' of these two were arrested for fast drivini; anil two for being engaged in an affray. The ladies of the First Baptist Church will give another of their delightful en tertainments at Rankin Hall, to-morrow evening. Strawberries, ice cream and other delicacies will be served and the ladifs hope to see a large number pres ent on the occasion. We did not learn the origin of the fire, ; Township Convention. There was a large turnout at the Democratic Township Convention, held at Rocky Point last Saturday, and the contest for delegates was spirited and lively. Messrs. LaFayette Robitzseh, William B. Hocut, T. J. Armstrong, Jas, M. Westbrook and Jesse B. Bow den were elected delegates to the con vention held at Burgaw on Monday. Dr. S. S. Satchwell.T. J.Armstrong, W. F. Robitzseh, and T. A. McLendon were elected a township committee. The convention was happily addressed by Mr. Thos. J. Armstrong. The City Attorney. Mr. Darby has not yet displayed the same good sense in tendering his resig nation as City Attorney as in resigning the empty honors of the County Exec utive Committee Chairmanship. Is he waiting for what will inevitably follow ? If so, he may be glad to learn that a resolution requesting his resignatign was prepared for the special meeting oi the Board of Aldermen, held on Monday afternoon, but after a con sultation among the Democratic mem bers of the Board, it was decided to postpone the matter until the regular meeting. T Iiippincott's Magazine. 5 The contents of Lippincott's for July are of a light and lively kind suitable for summer reading. "Black-Bass-Fishing in Sungahneetuk," carries us to some of the least frequented streams of the Adirondacks, and is very, agreeT ably written and finely illustrated. "An Afternoon in a French Hamlet," gives an auiinated description of peasant life amid the beautiful scenery of the forest of Fontaiuebleau. ''The Tiger of the Sea1' is the suggestive title of an article on sharks ; "In the Heart of the Allegh anjes," is the first of two papers which, taking Cresson for a centre, treat of the scenery and early hstory of the sur rounding country. "Walks with Bryant,'" gives a pleasant account of the poet's habits and daily life. A short illustrated article, describes 'The Coal Mines of the State of Dade," and the system of convict labor in Georgia. In fiction Lippincott's is, as usual.especially but she didnot leaye lier wharf. - WILMINGTON. N. C .WEDNESDAY, JUNE Order of Arrest Vacated. A motion to vacate the order of ar rest in the case of Mr. II. I). Thompson was argued yesterday before S. Van Amringe, Esq. Clerk of the Superior Court for this county, and the motion was granted. It seems that there was a fatal defect in the papers, the defend ant having been cited to appear at the wrong term of Court.- TIkj arrest was made three days before the June term and the citation was for . that-' instead of the Peeember term,, as required by law. . ; i ' : . y. 1 I ,'.. mesrr, the same being an act to aiuend Sec. 2, , Chap. 18, of BattleV RevisaJ. saysr; . -.t- . This tooth was a curiosity ; in itself. In shape it resembled a cypress stump, and the roots! I'll take my dying oath, they were rivetted in every . square inch of my body. After the dentist got me down, the first thing he did was to put one of those dressing hand glasses in my mouth and say, "There's a bad place.1' "Look here! You 'mustn't neglect that cavity." "Wh-o-o-o in the D-e-e-e-evil put that filling in? All the while humming an air ; he seemed to consider himself the only musician pres ent. Next he inserted a pair of cold steel forceps into my mouth (who ever forgets that cold steely feeling?) xand ''nntlv', lu a a onrlpoirnrin (r r nraf n n der the gums. I suggested, as well as W T 111 1 i couiu tnrougn a newspaper ana two towels, that if he was bent on excava ting this old landmark, I knew where he could borrow a pickaxe and a shovel, but it he was determined to draw it, 'twould be advisable to rig some pre venter braces across my head, and make them sale under my arms to save my neck from being pulled out like a telescope. I next remarked that "it hurt!" The absurdity of this appeared to surprise him beyond measure. lie said : "Nonsense! It don't hurt; it can't hurt ; it's only sympathizing with that other tooth whose nerve is exposed." I begged his pardon for hazarding an opinion on a matter in which any sensi ble person can readily see I could; know nothing. Then he forced the instru ment under the tooth and pried down on it, and then "I said:' something too numerous to" mention. " From this on the man seemed to regard me as a per sonal enemy. He "procured," as he phrased it, another hold and. gave a twist that turned me like a bottle on a string towing behind a steamboat; then suddenly reversing, I landed on the floor. About this epoch I said "hold on!" He re-' plied that I need have no fears, he would "hold on". Then followed a series of pullings, haulings, oscillations and tugs. The picture musfhave been a good one, so real, so; full of life. I ' was at ' the other end of the room ; he had brought me to bay in a corner and I wTas trying to shake him ofl. ; At this juncture I performed a vocal solo that would have melted a heart of stone, but he held on. I thought of my past life, tried to recall anything I could have possibly done to injure this man, how many times I had missed saying my prayers, of my father's teachings, of his sainfc-iike face, how bad I was to - call ' my ""brother" "a darned old cuss" just because in his zeal for my comfort he had knocked me on the head with the Family Bible : of my dear Sunday school teacher and ; how I wished he was in my place, and if I'd see my grandpa in heaven and whether rd rather 20 there and see him j or go the other place and not see Jiim, and just aathougtitX had done1 both, , something fetched away and the den list said "If you bad delayed much; longer you would have experienced some ineonvenienee in having it drawn. Two dollars, please," This man must no gamen on mis occasion, ir i " uui 1 iars couiu not na e ueguii 10 iiipiiuntpiuj liabilities. My wake was strewn with demoralized and dismembei-ed furni- uire, instrumenu 01 conure anu ims- 1 hand to assist in his deeds of darkness: the remains of this latter had vacated the premises until "grim visaged war had smoothed his wrinkled front." The next tooth I have pulled out I hope I hope I hope that man pulls it and I "experience,,, the like'inconvenience, Dentatus.
