An Important Survey. Thcmose important survey of tho Capo Fear River, from loint Peter, op posite the city, to Smithvile, ever made has just been completed, after nearly four months of hard labor. The survey was made under instruction of the Gov ernment by . Civil Engineers B. F. Maklc, Chas. Humphrcys and Thos. I. George, oi the Engineer Corps of tho U. S. Government, These gentlemen stand lugh in the profession and have devoted their taleflts with the greatest of care to tho important work. The river was thoroughly triangulated and the location oi every stump or Jobstruc tlon of any kind in tho bed of the river has been located. The survey was made with a view of deepening the river to sixteen feet, at low water, up to this city, and to ascertainiwhero the channel should run and where the steam dredges could accomplish the most good- - - A base line of forty miles was run and the proof of the survey shows that the lines were correct to a nicety seldom at tained in suoh surveys. Messrs. Makle, Humphrey and George will leave this morning for Bal timore, where they have- been ordered to p)qt out the field notes taken by them in their labors of the jwtst Tour monlhs.
