Saturday morning about one o'clock a burglar was seen in the residence of Mr. Andrew J, Mott, on Bladen between Fourth and Fifth streets. The inmates gave the alarm and the thief, who is said to have been colored, made good his escape. He effected an entrance by crawling through a window in the back part of the house. The police were soon on the spot, but the rascal evaded them by jumping fences and getting a good start on them. The Association's Certificate. Green and the Governor being on board. Col Ben nett arrived at Smith ville about an hour later on the Minnehaha. After resting tor about an hour and making some necessary arrangements as to where would be the best place and the coolest (for it wasa frightfully hot day), it was decided to have the speaking from the Hotel Brunswick piazza. At half past ISo'olook DrWG Curtis introduced, in a short and neat speech, our gallant standard bearer for Con gres, Col. Wharton J Green, who came forward and spoke of the high compli ment which had been conferred upon him by the people of the 3rd Congres sional District. Col Green then com menced a' reviewal of the administra tion, from the day they first held the reins of government, both National and State, and poured hot shot into their camp. He spoke for about three quar ters of an hour, and was listened to with marked attention by the audience Col. Green said while he knew and believed that if the Democrats f tho Third District would turn quarantine. Our health authorities are vigilant, and will dflffevery thing sail1 and wisdom can suggest to prevent its introduction here. Still what has been may happen again. What we mean to speak of now is the condition of our city. Our authorities are doing something toward keeping the city clean, and perhaps their best. We wouldiurge on every citizen that each second all their efforts and each assist all in their power to this end ; let every one police his own premises and all resolve to keep the town cleaned ; make this work a daily duty and let it be well performed. Having no intention to alarm, it would be well to look at mat ters seriously. It the weather continues as for the past two weeks, that is fre quent and. abundant rains and hot sun, we shall have the condition conducive and essential to sickness. To ward off this result as far as possible cleanliness is imperative. We would ' therefore suggest to all housekeepers not to allow servants to throw garbage in the street. As we understand it our city authorities have no systematic provisions its removal, save when the garbage Bird Cages. I LET SETS. LAMPS AND LAMP Goods. Preserving Kettle. Brass and Enam eled. Col. Green dwelt particularly upon Radical misrule and the atrocities committed by them. He said that in the short time allotted him he only intended this as an introducion of him I3lf but sooa. he would appear in Bruns wick to discuss the issues oft the day. Capt. V. V. Riohardson then intro duccd in very appropriate spech Hon. R. T. Bennett, who made one of the m . a finest political Mpoaahea we ever listened to. He dwelt particularly on the tariff question. We would be doms gross injustice to this distinguished son of North Carolina to attempt even a synopsis of this master speech, which was listened to by the audience with the greatest attention, and was frequent ly applauded and cheered. Judxrc Bennett spoke three hours ami a half, and delivered one of the most exhaustive arguments it has been tne good fortune of the people of Brunswick to hear in twenty-live years. Then the distinguished speaker re viewed the county government ques tion, and handled it with the same mastery he did the other questions dis cussed, and at the conclusion, a .;oKrl arm of South Caro- lina pronounced Judge Bennett's speech of the ablest, most argumentative speeches he nad heard since the days of Webster, Calhoun and Clay. There was but one expression of opinion about Judgc3ennett's speech, and that was it was the finest argument ever aeuv in old Smithville. At the conclu sion of his speech, the whistle sounded ed for the boat to leave, and we were n.hiA to hear Gov. . Jarvis,. who was introduced by Capt.-V. V. We would uree that all garbage and vegetable matter, the kitchen refuse, be made as dry as possible, and then destroyed by fire ; put it in the stove ; ourn n up, ui make a fire in the yard and effectually destroy it. It will take some care and - - - - . a trouble, but we had all better, tast tne means than run the risk of worse things. Too many people hereabouts are too much given to thrbwing all manner ot trash papers, tin cans, bottles, rags, etc., in fact everything they wish to get rid of into the streets. This were oaa enough, but to add to this all manner of carbage and kitchen refuse, with the addition of Slops ana oirty bevondtbe reach of decency. rom these piles come odors, not only offens ive and producing discomfort to the neighborhood, but fully charged with disease. Can we expect health when we will not take sanitary precautions:' rr wnr vou will, in this town, and, unless you leave your uose at home, vou cannot get away lrom oiiensive smells. Very many at home sometimes wish they had no nose, by reason of careless and thoughtless neighbors In very many places it is bad enough by day, but to tell the honest truth, the night smells are rank. In brief, cannot our city fathers put a stop to the throw ing of offensive matter into the public streets? They can at least use disin fectants freely and enforce its applica tion on private premises by their own health officers; let every citizen lend a helping band. Let all nave a general cleaning up, and then keep clean. The worst of the Bummer is to come, and now is the time for earnest work.
