We regret to learn that Mr. J. C White, the affable and energetic mana ger of the Telephone Exchange of this city, is confined in his room with a so wn? attr-ck of bilious fever. We trust he will soon recover and be able to at attend to his duties. A little colored boy was run over by a carriage at the corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets, yesterday, about noon. The boy was taken up and carried to the City Hall, where his condition was hxled into. He was not badly hurt. A young gentleman of this city, who ai returning from a visit a few e?cn lzZ ajo, was stoned by some persons crknown to him. Ho unlimbered his joiau and gate them a hasty adieu. Between these two points it is under stood that the new time will be less than 48 hours and between Wilmington and New York about 1 hours. Just think of it! Breakfast in New York and supper in Wilmington! Col. Green's Appointments. The following additional appoint ments are announced by Col. Green : At Clinton (Sampson county) Satur day, Sept. ICtli. , . i, At Elizabcthtown (Bladen)Ionday, ISth. , At McKcithan's store (Brunswick) day of county convention Saturday Sept. 23d. In Iuplin )placo to be named here after) with Gov Jarvis, Tuesday, 26th. . , Tlio Cyclone. There were many wild rumors on the street yesterday as to the cyclone. The wires of the signal t service were down and telegraphic communication with the coast stations could not be had. We learn from a private source that a terrible whirlwind passed over Scott's, Ilill Topsail Sound on Sunday night houses were blown down, trees were torn up by the roots and fences and crops were laid low. I A house , on Dr SheppanTs farm, occupied by Geo. St. George, colored, was blown down, and the inhabitants barely escaped with their lives. It is tho opinion of Mr. Haney, the signal officer in charge here that wo will have very little wind. The barometer is 4rising slowly, !which in dicates clearing weather. He thinks it will be cool and cloudy to-day with lteht rains. t Anything in the hardware line can be found at reasonable prices at Jaco bi's. t Personal. , Col. Wharton J. Green was in the city 3 estcrday. lie will be at his home in Cumberland to-day but will resume his canvass this week. Wo were pleas ed to receive a call from him yesterday and to know that he Is confident as to Lhis clect'on, a point as to which we most cordially agree. I i Kcv.Thos. D. Pitts, Rector of St. John's, left here last evening for Bris tol, It. I , where his family have been spending the Summer. Mr. Pitts will be absent nearly three weeks and ex pects the family to return with him. Capt.- James Knighti Master ol Transportation of the W.& W. and W. C. A. Rail Roads, returned to the city Saturday night after a short visit to Washington City. Mr. W.T. Birdsall, traveling agent for M. II. Lindenmeyer's papr house in New York, and a gentleman well known to many persons here, has been in the city for several days. r!nnt. Dollv Brownimr talks of re tiring soon, from active railroad life. He has been ruuning on the W. cc . R R. for more than a quarter of a cen tury past. Ho says that he is getting too heavy for the business.whicn means that he is getting too old ' Freshwater Pcrch.Trout and Black fih hoots and lines. A full assort ment and lowest prices at jAC03i'&.f . Barrett's Circus. Messrs. S. II. Barrett & Co's. circus has undoubtedly merited , the enco miums it has received from the press and people along ita route. The circus, we think, is the best that has visited this city in some time past. The riding was fine and tho tumbling was hand somely " and dextronsly: done. Owing to the threatening cyclone the peak of the circus pavilion was lowered and the trapeze performance was consequently omitted. The performance bf the Malay was simply wonderful and seems in credible. . The female equestriennes are the finest we have teverj seen. They perform some acts which are seldom ever attempted by females. I Mr. Orrin Hollis, the malo eques trian, is a fine rider, and, to' our minds, is as g53d as tho younger- Robin son. Tho feat of ;ifUng with the teeth a barrel filled with water, a heavy ta ble and a man seated in a chair, was successfully performed. The menag erie is as good as is ever seen j with a traveling show, and we must say that Mr. Barrett gives an honest exhibition. The men arc under excellent discipline and we were particularly stnicK with tho gentlemanly bearing of all the at tachees. The concert after the perform ance was better than mostbf its kind. Now, we must doff our hit to Mr. H r H . : - : AV'H M ; U A WILMINGTON. N. C . TUESDAYv SEPTEMBER Willis Cobb, the gentlemanly and clever Press Agent of the troupe. He seems lb liave an eye on everything, and looks carefully to the ease and conifort of his patrons. We '' cheerful ly recom mend him, and the circus, to the people where over they show. " ' ' ) . '.' . ' , i . The Rice Crop. 1 t This crop seems to be generally good this year and if it is successfully . har vested will show a considerable increase over that of last season, the shortness of which was due mainly to the' great losses by the storms of August 27 , and September 9th, the latter one year ago to-day. - ...... , The prices are by some expected to be somewhat lower than they were dur ing the past season. Whether this will be so or not remains to be seen. - The great, we might say extraordinary, in crease in the annual domestic consump tion of this article of food, &c, will go a great way to maintain full prices this year. 1 . : . By examining the agricultural reports for the past 16 years it will be seen that there has been a larger increase in the consumption than in the home produc tion. In 1865-'66 "the production was 11,592,600 pounds and jn 1880-181 it was 117.766,000 pounds an increase of 106, 173.400 pounds between the years 1866 and 188 1. The increase in production between the y ears f 1880 and 1881 was 30,709,200 pounds, while the increase in the domestic consumption for the same period was 40,145,972 pounds, which shows there w&s not enough domestic rice produced by 9,376,772 pounds for the domestic consumption, equal to 312,560 bushels of rough rice, which had to be supplied by foreign rice. And this happened in a year when the in crease in the domestic crop was 40,145, 972 pounds or 1,338,199 bushels of rough rice. A very farorble indication that Drices will not be reduced much, if any. is the fact that none, or very little of our home mado rice is exported. It is in such demand at home that it finds a ready market at good prices, or has done so during the past decade. 1 : In lSGS- there were consumed in tho United States 63,362,280 pounds of nee, while m 1880-78l the total con sumption was 175,535,691, an increase of 112,173,411 pounds. Wo do not see where there is any probability of a declino in rice lor the present crop of Carolina rice. ' - ,1 Tho crop of this State seems to be es timated at about 60,000 to 65,000 bashels of tide-water, and 200,000 bushels of upland rice. Wilmington, Sept. 9.
