T-r Relative to tliis' achievement, Uie Herald of tho fame ilate says, cdito-1 nally: I TcI-el-Kcbir, Arabia first stronghold on the Fresh Water Canal, was yester day captured by the Uritish troops in about hair an hour. Wolseley's men fought very gallantly ; the Egyptians re-; sistcd even more feebly than usual ; i i ! -. n ... i r iiicir icaucr inauc his cscapu on on Arab horse. Td criticiso the details of the attack would be to exaggerate lU importance. It ncciled no great stratc- a great FACT AND FICTION. The lNew lork Jlcralit is .paper, without a doubt. Its abuudant capital, controlled by an indomitable cnersrr and perseverance, enables it to furnish reliable information frota every quarter of tho globo at the shortest possible notice, and often in advance of every other channel of inicrcomDiuni- ' ' cation. As a netcs paper it is a success Xx beyond all its contemporaries ; a fact which U frvcly cohcctlcd by iitnc teuths or the readioj: public. In every department qThcicj commercial, mar " I time, financial, political, social and ' general it has no c jtial iu this couutry, " .and we doubt if it has iu any other country. , Bat while we concede, cheerfully, all ' - the above newspaper excellencies to its columns, we are constrained to say that its editorial pages furnish some of tho most unreliable reading of any pa rser within our knowledge, and its edi torial comments and opinions, in many instances, are crudely cooked batches of absurdity, ridiculous in their attempts at wisdom, and fallacious when tested by actual events. Onr attention has been frequently called to these facts when perusing its r editorial columns, and recently, in an -especial manner, by tho way in which it has conducted the Egyptian campaign, on paper, and its censurable criticisms upon Sir Garnet Wolcsley and those to " whom the actual duties of .that cam paign have been entrusted by the Bri tish government. For several weeks in fact, almost from the hour that Gen eral Wolseley left England for .the scat of war the Herald has teemed with carping criticisms of the plans and op erations of tho army in Egypt, and more recently, with an assumption of wisdom approaching oracular, it has denounced every movement in ado by the British forces. In its issuo of the '.13th last., tho Uerald says : J Tot Tcl-cl-Kebir must be speedily capturtxi. ui mat mere is no doubt. It lies directly on the road to Cairo, and Sir Garnet Wolseley cannot aflord to a . m mm mm - . mast it ana pass on to iagazig. lie is a. f 1 ir I gy cither in conception or , execution. It jccius to be impressed upon the mind of the military strategist of the Herald that Sir Ganict Wolseley is a fool and he would account for tho wonder ful success of the latter upon the truth of the ancient axiom oi a fool for luck." He warns u however, tliat the show is not yet over, and that there arc very suspicious circumstances con "nectcd with the capture of Tel-El-Kcbir which itwquld be un-in Hilary and un warranted to overlook. In this same article from which we have quoted, he cays: j 1 But is there not something suspicious iu the readiness with which Tel-cl-Kc-bir was evacuated? Is it not possible that the works were held by peasant Bedouins, aud that the regulars escaped? 'Half the Egyptians opposed to us," says a correspondent, werc rabble." There arc stronger defences thau Tel-cl-Kobir on tho road to the capital. There is the capital itself. Terrible scenes may be enacted at Cairo. Uc can wi destination. As all the foregoing diflicullics and obstacles had becu overcome beforq the above had become dry from the ; press, and Cairo was occupied by the British before the Herald !of that date had reached f urther than a few siiburban po-toflice, it would seem that its dolcr" ous suspicionmgs were needless, huch reading, however, is j interesting as showing that the pcu-and-ink warrior of the New York crfAys:ibtuieudous success as a failure. -, r- VIRGINIA. r I!
