Staples, 011 taking the stand, open ed his speech with an anecdote and soon won the respect and attention of his large audience, which is variously esUmaled at from 700 to l.OpO. In jus tice to Col. Staples wc will not attempt a review of his able arguments. There is but ono expression of jsentiraen in regard . to the 1 speech J and that is that it was one j of (the very best ever delivered in this city. He spoke for about two hours and was ask ed to "go on" when he signified his (In tention of bringing his speech to a close. He showed up the iniquities of the cor rupt Republican party since they have been in power, both in the National and State GoVernmenti; anil proved that the j'Liberal" alias t)leomararine party was but a branch of the Republican vine. He touched on the Prohibition Question and stoutly denied that it was anything but a question of morality and temperance, but said if our opponents wanted to make it a political issue they arc at liberty to do so. For, said he, the Democratic party has a record on it which theyro "willing to stand by; He said the memorials containing 300, 000 names, asking for a Prohibition bill, were presented to the General As sembly and were pressed by the clergy laity and over 250,000 1 citizens as no bill was ever pressed before He further stated that the Democratic party, not wishing to curtail the rights or privileges of tho people of the State, peremptorily refused to pass a prohibi tion bill, making it by enactment of the Geueral Assembly a low; but presented to the people of the State a bill for them to ratify or reject. The sovereign peo ple voted it down with a majority of 117,000, and he asked those present If they thought tho Democrats would try and secure a sumptuary law in the face of the facts before them, when a Dem ocratic Legislature refused to pass a bill prayed for by 300,000 people" before submitting it to the popular vote. He referred to tie internal, Improvements since tho party of good Igovernment came into power in this State. He cited the building of railroads, the ten Normal schools five of which are for the whites and five for the colored people. -The InianeAsylups at Golds boio and 'Mofganton, and other im provements and challenged any of the Republican orators; to point out one nine of railroad which was built under Republican rule or to , show that even oho bttckAvasMaid inthe erection of schools of learning. In the audience were quite a large number of colored persons who listened attentively to- the. speaker's cool, con vincing and dispassionate address: Col.
