Wo wish him every suc cess in his new field of labor, but regret to sec him throw aside the mantle of the fraternity. itice Uirds and Coots. . Thero have been fewer ! rico birds in market and in the fields this year than has been known for several years past. A rico farmer tells us that the reason they are so scarce this year is owing to tho fact that the crops ripened earlier this season than usual and that the birds, being soa beaked, could not open tho rough hard shells and left for other parts where thoy could feed on green seed. He further says that the signs are favorable for a large crop of coots. Kit and tbo Fox. I .Tho Fox Club were out after Reynard yesterday and carried a new recruit with them, Mr. J. T. Carson, who was, so to speak, first in at the death. The. race is said to have been a very exciting and interesting one. The dogs treed the fox and our friend, Kit-Carson, was called upon to shin the tree and poke him out. How well he performed the duty can be imagined by the fact that he was made an honorary member of the club. We do not care for our friends to think that Kit is as successful in all his undertakings. He has been trying for some twelve years to capture "a parcel wrapped up in about fourteen yards of calico," and ha3 not succeeded as yet in getting that parcel to say "Go ask papa." He has had hard luck and has gotten the mitten from eighteen dif ferent maidens in eighteen consecutive days. He doesn't seem to be in despair and thinks that there is a chance for him vet. He is a sewing machine man and does not let a little negative answer disturb his equilibrium. 1--- The Comet Seen Here. The comet, which was discovered a few days since, was seen here yester day morning for tho first time. It was in the southeastern horizon and was plainly visible with the naked eye, and exhibited a tail apparently about one hundred and fifty feet long, with a very bright head. Tho tail started from the head, which looked to be about" the size of the end of a man's finger. A series of observations of the new comet have been taken at the Naval Observatory by Frof. Frisby and his assistants, and Prof. Lewis Bass, of thejDudley Obser vatory. Albany, who ii preparing for departure for Santiago ac Chili, where ho is to observe the transit of Venui. The results were so perfect that Pro fessor Bass announces as a practically demonstrated fact that the present comet is identical with that recently dis covered by Cruls in Rio de Janeiro, Gould's comet, discovered in South America in 1880, and the great comet of 1843. He predicts that the same comet will return at shorter intervals, and within the next ten years it will crash Into the sun and become lost as an in dividual body North CarolIna'Apples. The finest apple irrown in tho world is to be found in Western North Caro- lina. Some ot tho varieties raised in that section are superior in beauty and flavor to anything that can be raised to the North of ns, and 1 yet it is a rare thing to see any of these apples in tho Wilmineton market. Why is this? Those that are brought are not of the best and are so poorly prepared for market as to make an unfavorable com- ' !.U A I parison, in appearance, wim iuua which are brought nere from tne norm. There can be no reason why the v ll- mlngton market should not be wholly supplied with North Carolina apples. Now is the time for. our mountain friends to bo making themselves ready fr. nmnerlv rather their fruit so as xo ship it in marketable packages in the Fall and Winter Apple nouses saoum betroiltand barrel staves gotten-out. Stir up your neighbors, brother Fur man, and give the people of Western North Carolina encouragement to snip the most important product of their orchards, down to their own seaport. In this way a large "amount of money which now annually goes northward to pay for apples will find its way to tho Western part of our glorious old State. Unlike other cathartics. N. C. SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 30. 1882. Mr.Thos. C. Craft, who has been very ill for some weeks past, appeared abroad yesterday for. the first j time since he was taken sick. He has had a severe attack of typhoid fever. Exports Foreign; Dan. barque Elene, Capt. Dahls, cleared yesterday for Glasgow with 4,500 barrels rosin, .valued at $7,800, shipped by Messrs Alex. Sprunt & Son. The Nor. barque 2b, Capt, Henrick- sen, cleared yesterday for Antwerp with 1.000 casks spirits turpentine and 2,250 barrels rosin, valued at $25,500, ship ped by Messrs Alex. Sprunt & Son. Beautiful Beef. We saw yesterday, at Mr Melton's meat store, corner Market and Second streets, about the prettiest veal that has been in this market this season. The calf was only five or six weeks old and it is said had never eaten a particle of solid food. It was so fat that it was difficult to understand how it could ever have walked. Only those in mar ket early will see it, as it will not long remain on the stall. Gets Even "With Him. Mr. W. B. Davis met with quite a serious accident on Thursday. He was standing talking to Mr. Geo. R Dyer, when the latter jocosely punched a small pocket knife at him. Mr. Davis threw up his hand and the blade of the knife penetrated the fleshy' part of it. About five years asco Mr. Davis inflict ed a similar wound on the handjof his friend under just such circumstances and after five years Damon gets even with Pythias. Third Ward Democratic Club. The Third Ward Democratic Club met at the City Hall last evening and perfected their organization by appoint ing necessary committees. Friday night ot each week was adopted as a regular meeting night. Messrs. W. B. McKoy, L. H. Bowden, G. J. Boney," Joseph McLaurin, T. Donlan, Samuel Bear, Jn, and Robert H, McKoy ad dressed the Club. The Third Warders are determined to organize thoroughly and leave no stone unturned to secure the election of the Democratic can didates. Now let other wards do like wise. Improvements In the Opera House. I There are several very noticeabe im provements in the interior of the Opera House. The dress circle boxes have been made smaller and so arranged as to bring several good seats into use which have heretofore been cut off from a view of the stage. In addition, the alteration in the shape of the boxes forms a couple of nice stalls. The benches in the orchestra have allheen newly up holstered and are very nice and com fortable seats. The center of the third tier has been partitioned off, the seats nicely upholstered and the isles carpet ed. This will be for the exclusive use of the better portion of the colored peo ple who wish to attend the theatre but who object to being mixed up promis cuously with the "gallery gods? !
