Kicaud. .John 1).- Bellamy, Jr., and John C. Davis, in behalf of the Liberal and Republican County hxerulivc Com mittee, I desire to, ask a division of lime at said meeting. ' 1 am, sir, very recctrully K. II. King. Wilmington', N. C, Oct. 4, 1882. Mic. E. II. Kin;, Dear Sir: Your conimunicatioli rciucsting a division of time at tho Democratic meeting .in the Filth ' Ward has just been handed me. i Our- speakers, Messrs. Bellamy, Davis and Ricaud are all willing to grant a division of time, but owing to the lateness of the hour when your note was received, 5 :20 o'clock this . P. M., and the fact that the meeting has Ixien advertised exclusively as a Democratic meeting, I will have to decline. But to show the willingness, ot the gentlemen to meet you they authorize me ta state that they each or all will meet you at any time and place you may designate. GJ J. BONET, Ch'm. Dem. Ex. Com. It will bo seen by Mr. Boney's reply that the request for a division of time was treated in a fair and courteous spirit and that a good reason was given for declining the proposed divi sion. This should have been sufficient but it seems that it was not, as an attempt was .made to inter fere with the meeting and to break it up-; an attempt which was evidently the result of a preconcerted plan and which : seems; to have met with the en dorsement of some prominent leaders of the Republican party who were present on the occasion. This is to be condemned in plain terms. It is not a legitimate mode of warfare and will not bo tolerated. The Democrats in this city are fully able to take care of themselves and they propose to do so. They do not interfere with the Republi cans in their meetings and they do not intend to allow others to interfere with them. In this they arc sustained by the strong arm of the law and it will bo exerted to the utmost !to protect them in their rights. t This ;much for the position of the Democrats in this city in regard to in terference Jwith their meetings. And now let! tis say something rise. We would earnestly beg of our citizens, of all classes, colors and conditions, to see that this campaign is conducted in a proper, quiet manner, as becomes an intelligent ixxple. Nothing can be gained by violence, and we are satisfied thai no ono will submit to intimi dation. We arc one people, what ever our differences of i political sentiment . may be, 1 and we can sco no reason in the world "why these differences cannot be settled in a quiet and orderly manner. In this country every man is entitled to his own opinion, and to tho expression of it, without fear, and this js one of his inalienable rights, and he is a coward who" is not prepared to maintain it. Let us then get through with this cam paign, if not without heat ana asper ities; at all events with an. outward show of respect and regard for the opin ions of others and tho law of the land. OCTOBER Yesterday afternoon the city authori ties took charge of the Market House property, which was purchased a few days ago. Wo presume the authorities will put the market ordinances in force. I An Old larrot. A talking parrot, the property of Cap tain R. A. Price, died at its owner's residence on the corner of Front and Woqstcr streets, on Wednesday. The Madison Square Theatre Com pany was greeted last night by a very large audience. The troupe is a veryl. fine ono in every respect ana jusuy un serves the praise which has been be stowed upon it. It can be truthfully said that there is not a poor actor in the troupe. Miss Belle Gilbert, as Hazel KirkOr-compietely won her audience. She is an actress of great ability and renders her character in a most charm ing and artistic manner. Miss Spence as Dolly Dutton was also very pleasing and charming. Mrs. Chas. Peters, as Mercyiike, played tbe part of the old laldy to per fection. Mr. Burbock, as Pittacus Green, was simply immense and ia his particular role is inimitable. Mr. R. F. McClannin's Dunstan Kirke was in every sense of tho word the old English gentleman. Aaron Rodney, by Mr. Meldon, was faithfully performed. All of tho minor parts were good, and in a word wo are free to admit that the company is the best which has visited this city in a number of years. To nhzht they appear in the charming Nerth Carolina melodrama; of Esmer alda. "Indian Department." 'Washington D. C. I am anxious to introduce Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup among my Indians, hav ing used it myself tor several months, and think it one of the finest remedies I ever found. I assure you. it is the only thing that ever relieved me of a protracted cough, brought on only., by exposure while on the 'Sioux Com mis ion last year. : A. G. BOONE, Agent for Poncas and U. S. Commis sioner. Painful Accident. An old colored man by the nane of Sam, (surname unknown to us), for merly in the employ of Mr. George Myers, met with a very painful, if not serious, accident at the wharf of the New York Steamship Co., at about 7 o'clock this morning. It seems that he was assisting to load the steamer, and had one of the ordinary wharf trucks, upon which was a box of bacon, when a plauk gave way and his foot slipped, the truck coining against the under part of tho thigh near the knee, inflicting 'a deep gash which nearly severed two of the sinews. He had strength enough, however, to walk up to the drug store of Mr. J. K. Mclll henny. where Mr. J. W. Conoley was in attendance, who dressed tho wound neatly and then sent for a conveyance and had the man sent to his home.--The wound is a painful one, and will probably confine him to his house for se7eral weeks. 1 Anything in the hardware line can be fotmd at reasonable prices at Jaco Mr. J. - W. Barnes, in clearing out one of his hotbeds yesterday, carue across a rattlesnake which was a mon ster. His snakeship was soon dis patched. . . 11 We learn that quite a number of col ored people in this city actually believe that tlie comet will cross the sun to-day and shut out the light so1 completely as to make a total darkness, which will continue for the next four days. i Our New Front Will be completed by .
